MONROE — The WIAA released the boys brackets on Sunday, Feb. 19 during a live stream. Regionals will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The lower seeded teams will travel to the higher seeded teams.
Monroe received a No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 seed Portage. Although the two teams are fifth and sixth in the Badger West Conference, respectively, the Cheesemakers defeated the Warriors by a 22-point margin on Saturday, Feb. 18.
No. 11 seed Brodhead (7-15 overall, 5-11 Rock Valley) also faces a conference foe in No. 6 seed Evansville (13-9, 12-4). The Blue Devils swept the Cardinals in the regular season by scores of 71-48 and 76-61.
With a 16-6 record, New Glarus earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye. The Knights will play the winner of No. 5 Dodgeville and No. 12 River Valley. Unless River Valley pulls the upset, New Glarus would play Dodgeville in the regional semifinal. In January, the Knights edged the Dodgers 58-57.
Darlington, ranked fifth in all of Division 4 with a 21-2 record, received the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. The Redbirds will play the winner of No. 9 Randolph and No. 8 Cambridge. Despite a high rank, Darlington has arguably the toughest sectional, as four other teams — Luther, Cuba City, Mineral Point and Aquinas — were all ranked during the year.
No. 16 seed Juda, still searching for its first win, would have to pull a Cinderella-story win against No. 1 seeded Fall River. The Pirates are currently ranked sixth in al of Division 5.
If the Panthers pull the upset, they’d play the winner of No. 9 Black Hawk and No. 8 Pecatonica. The Vikings have two games on the Warriors in the Six Rivers East. In both meetings, Pecatonica won 56-54 and 45-30.
With a 5-18 overall record, Albany received the No. 13 seed. As of print time, the Comets won their last two conference games, including an overtime upset over Black Hawk. The team faces Lake City Conference champions Salam.
No. 6 Argyle, three games below .500, host No. 11 Catholic Central. The two teams don’t share an opponent, but based on records alone (10-13; 3-20), the Orioles have the upper hand.
As the No. 10 seed, Monticello will travel to the No. 7 seed Cambria-Friesland. The two teams don’t share a common opponent, and, as of print time, they both won three of their last five games.
