BLANCHARDVILLE — Three Vikings pitchers combined to 1-hit Argyle in a 13-0 win May 17 at McKellar Park.

Hunter Enloe got the nod to start and tossed two innings of hitless ball with a walk and four strikeouts. Coy Ruegsegger came in and threw just 23 pitches across two innings of work, scattering a hit and a walk with a pair of strikeouts. Tyler McKeon threw the final frame for Pecatonica.

“We’ve had some good pitching this year,” Vikings coach Jim Strommen said. “Hunter’s had some arm problems, so we’re working him back in and give him a couple of innings. Coy, too. We have a lot of guys that aren’t going to dazzle you with velocity, but they will be consistent throwing strikes and forcing the other team to put it in play.”

Pecatonica opened the game with an 8-run first inning against Argyle starter Will Helfvogt. Just one of the eight runs was earned.

“The word that describes us so far this season is ‘opportunistic’. We have been very opportunistic when teams have had to make pitching changes because of the pitch count — like against Johnson Creek and New Glarus. A different guy on the mound good for us and we took advantage,” Strommen said.

In the second inning, the Vikings (10-1, 2-0 Six rivers East) added five more runs against reliever Brady Penniston. Jayden Johnson threw two scoreless innings after that for Argyle (1-8, 0-2).

Pecatonica hitters collected seven hits, eight walks, and one HBP in the 5-inning contest. Leadoff hitter Kegun Brunker was a home run away from the cycle in a 3-for-3 performance with three runs and three RBIs. Dakota Doescher, the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and three RBIs. Enloe had a hit, two walks, an RBI and two runs. Jameson Johnson walked and scored twice.

Jayden Johnson had Argyle’s lone hit in the third inning.

Up next for the Orioles is a road game at Monticello-Albany May 24, then back-to-back home games against Black Hawk and Pecatonica May 26 and 27.

The Vikings were slated to be at Barneveld May 21, with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the Six Rivers East. Pecatonica is then scheduled to host Wisconsin Heights May 22 in a nonconference game, before hosting Black Hawk and Mineral Point May 24 and 25.

“Friday is the big one at Barneveld,” Strommen said. “Really, we just started conference last week and we only have eight conference games. We just talk about getting better each day we are out here. If we keep doing that, keep getting better and keep being opportunistic, we’ll be alright.”

Marshall 6, New Glarus 4

NEW GLARUS — A 4-run fourth inning was all Marshall needed to slip by the Glarner Knights in a Capitol South game May 17.

The Cardinals had scored twice in the top of the first inning, but New Glarus plated a run in both the bottom of the first and third innings to square things away.

Knights starting pitcher Kylo Barker saw his steady first three innings fade in the fourth, as he needed to be replaced by Peyton Mendleski. Barker finished the night allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits, a hit batter and three walks in three innings of work. Mendleski tossed the final four innings, allowing an earned run to cross the plate in the fourth.

At the plate, Carter Siegenthaler was 2-for-3 with a walk and Easton Dreyfus was 2-for-4. Nathan Streiff and Darris Schuett each doubled for the Knights, which collectively left 12 men on base in the contest.

Barneveld 5, Black Hawk 3

BARNEVELD — The Warriors made Barneveld work for the win May 17 in a Six Rivers East Conference game. Both teams finished with four hits, while Black Hawk committed an error.

Black Hawk took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, as Dempsey Schliem, Jexen Stietz and Clayton Stietz all reached on walks and came around to score on a wild pitch, balk and passed ball all in a span of just four pitches.

Barneveld starting pitcher Trenton Owens left after the first inning, in which he struck out two with three walks and no hits allowed. Chase Ignatius took over in the second and went on to strike out 12 with zero walks and four scattered hits in six innings of work.

Black Hawk’s Dylan Haldiman pitched four innings, allowing three runs (two earned). Jexen Stietz finished the fifth inning, allowing two runs to score, and Carter Baumgartner threw in the bottom of the sixth.

“Great four innings pitched by Dylan Haldiman, and solid defense behind him,” Black Hawk coach Mike Burke said. “We simply could not get the bats going to support his effort.”

Cambridge 13, Monticello-Albany 2

CAMBRIDGE — The Bluejays scored four runs in the first and second innings, then threw up a 5-spot in the bottom of the third to take complete control over the Ponies.

Monticello-Albany scored both runs (Carson Gafner and Brayden Bakken) in the first inning. The Ponies also committed six errors in the game.

Tyler Anderson doubled for the Ponies, which had just four hits against Cambridge pitcher Carter Lund. Anderson also pitched for Monticello-Albany, tossing all four innings on 88 pitches. He gave up 12 hit and walked two batters, though just five of the 13 runs were earned.
