ARGYLE — The Orioles swept Black Hawk for the second time this season, winning 25-23, 25-16, 25-20 on Sept. 30.
“We were a little bit slow to start, not quite our best,” said Argyle coach Connie Wunschel. The Orioles have been dealing with a mild illnesses, and it took the squad a bit to get going on the court.
Maggie Godfrey had 14 kills and 21 digs to lead Argyle, while Megan Johnson dished out 33 assists and recorded five aces. Grace Ganshert finished the evening with 15 digs and 13 kills, and Breann Flannery tallied 15 digs and six kills.
“I thought Grace played a really good game on defense,” Wunschel said.
Black Hawk setter Ellie Edler had 16 assists, while Raylin Peterson notched eight kills and three blocks. Tara Wellnitz had two aces and four digs.
The Orioles then took second at the Belmont Tournament Oct. 2. Two of the six teams dropped out, but Wunschel was still pleased her squad got to play as many games as they did.
Argyle beat Belmont and Viroqua in three sets in pool play, but lost to Wonewoc in three sets. In the elimination bracket, Argyle defeated Viroqua in two sets, 25-16, 25-11, but lost to Wonewoc in the championship 23-25, 25-21, 7-15.
Grace Ganshert had 22 kills and 46 digs on the day, while Maggie Godfrey finished with 49 kills, 43 digs and four blocks. Megan Johnson finished with 17 aces, three blocks and 66 assists. Breann Flannery added 10 aces, two blocks and 37 digs.
Up next for Argyle is an Oct. 7 game against Albany, one that will feature a cancer awareness theme and will include basket raffles and t-shirts from RBS Activewear.
Cuba City 3, Darlington 1
CUBA CITY — The Redbirds had three different players with two aces each, but it was the Cubans who walked away with the four-set win Sept. 30.
Cuba City, ranked honorable mention in D3 by the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association, received 19 kills and three aces from star Ella Vosberg. Ella McKinley had 20 digs and Bree Krause added three blocks. The Cubans are positioned as the team to beat in the SWAL, with no conference losses and just three matches left on the schedule.
Jada Ruf, Taylor Wedig and Jaylyn Schwartz each had two aces for Darlington. Ruf added five blocks, while Wedig tallied 11 kills. Zoie Zuberbuhler added 10 digs and Aubrey McCarthy dished out 28 assists.
Monticello 3, Albany 0
MONTICELLO — The fifth-ranked Ponies brushed off another Six Rivers East opponent on Sept. 30, throwing the Comets off their path 25-13, 25-12, 25-19.
Ellie Gustafson had 12 kills and eight digs for Monticello, while Kelsy Grant finished with 20 assists and a pair of aces. Hannah Clark added seven kills, while Katelyn Eyler tallied four kills.
Brianna Dahl had eight kills, 14 digs and an ace for Albany. Anna Ellinger finished with two blocks, Payton Firth tallied seven assists and Myah Johnson had an ace.
Oregon 3, Monroe 0
OREGON — The Panthers swept the Cheesemakers Sept. 30, 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.
Ariel Gruenberg had two aces for Monroe and Corrina Snider finished the night with 12 digs. Taylor Broge finished with seven kills and a block.
The Cheesemakers completed just 73.7% of their serves, while the Panthers served to a 91.9% success rate with 19 aces.
