Argyle undefeated in Six Rivers after beating Monticello in four sets

MONTICELLO — The Argyle Orioles remained undefeated in girls volleyball after beating the Monticello Ponies 3-1 (25-8, 14-25, 25-9, 25-20) in Six Rivers conference action Tue. Sept. 9.

Set one saw the Orioles dominate, taking a 9-5 lead after a kill by junior Avari Steiner followed by three straight kills by senior Kylie Butler. Later, Butler placed three aces in a row to give the Orioles a 20-7 lead. Argyle allowed only one more point after that to win the set 25-8.

Monticello turned the tables in set two, getting a 10-5 lead on kills by senior Kennadee Johnson and junior Braelynn Holz. A net serve and a return error opened up a 19-10 lead for the Ponies, who went on to take set two, 25-14.

The next two sets belonged to the Orioles. In the third set, junior Brook Wellnitz smashed a pair of kills to turn a 10-5 Orioles lead into a 14-6 advantage. Sophomore Claire Holmes scored three aces around a return error by the Ponies to open up a 20-7 lead. Butler finished off the set with a kill to give Argyle a 25-8 win. 

Set four started out close before Wellnitz got a kill to give the Orioles an 11-10 lead. A net serve and an ace by Holmes followed by another kill by Wellnitz increased the lead to 15-12. An ace by senior Lexi Wonders put the Orioles up 20-15. A sideways kill by Holmes gave Argyle a 23-19 lead before a failed block kill attempt by the Ponies gave the Orioles the set and the match 25-20. 

Kylie Butler led the Orioles with 13 kills, 21 digs, six aces and one block. Brooke Wellnitz had 13 kills, 16 digs, one ace and two blocks. Avari Steiner recorded 28 assists, 10 digs and two aces.

Argyle improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Six Rivers East. Argyle traveled to Juda on Sept. 11 while Monticello (1-5, 0-2) hosted Albany the same in Six Rivers East Conference play.
