Oriole trio up to the task

ARGYLE — With a 4-8 mark in conference, Argyle finished third in the Six Rivers East a year ago. This season, juniors Max Godfrey, Will Helfvogt and sophomore Ike Waage will lead the Orioles in their quest for a winning season.

Godfrey was Argyle’s lone First-Team All-Conference selection as a utility player in 2022. He batted at a .339 clip and led the team in RBIs. On the mound, he recorded a 4.33 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 42 innings.

Helfvogt received Honorable Mention recognition last year for his .388 offensive performance. He also led the team in runs scored. Defensively, Helfvogt will eat up innings on the bump and man first base.

Waage, as a freshman last year, struck out 17 batters in 14 innings. He also plays the outfield.

With three capable pitchers, head coach Tyler Ritschard believes his team will remain competitive in games.

“We have some experienced pitchers,” Ritschard said. “If we can keep pitch counts down, we can go longer in games.”

Six Rivers East 2022 Standings

Pecatonica 12-1; 20-3

Barneveld 10-2; 15-4

Argyle 4-8; 5-14

Black Hawk 2-10; 2-16

Monticello-Albany 0-13; 0-24

While the three aforementioned players give Argyle a solid core, the Orioles will struggle to fill in other positions with just 10 on their roster.

“Our numbers will be a challenge,” Ritschard said. “A roster of 10 will make for a challenging season.”

Ritschard believes Pecatonica is the favorite to win the Six Rivers East, again. Despite graduating Player of the Year Hunter Enloe, a good chunk of the roster returns.

“Pecatonica lost a small senior class,” Ritschard said. “They will be looking to push further after their late postseason run last year.”
