MONROE — Orangeville won the annual Monroe softball tournament April 23 at Twining Park, knocking off Freeport in the championship game 12-2.
Monroe lost to Pearl City 6-0 in the third-place game, while Argyle was no-hit but drew 10 walks and four hit-by-pitches in a tight 7-6 walk-off loss to Tomahawk in the fifth-place game.
Orangeville senior Tessa Janecke went 5-for-10 at the plate with four walks, six runs, four RBIs, two home runs and a double. Megan Holder was 6-for-12 with eight RBIs, a grand slam and a double. Isabelle Talbert was 6-for-11 with a double, five runs and four steals. Leah Baker allowed six earned runs in 19 innings at pitcher for the Broncos, striking out 10.
The Broncos defeated Argyle in its first game of the day 12-4, then defeated Monroe 9-6 to advance to the championship game. In the final against Freeport, the Broncos out-hit the Pretzels 16-5. In the top of the seventh, leading 8-3, Holder sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in centerfield for a grand slam.
Monroe lost to Pearl City in group play, 6-0, and defeated Argyle 6-2. The Cheesemakers had just two hits against Pearl City. Sloane Ambrose led Monroe with four hits on the day, including a double and triple. Sydnee Conway had three hits, as did Karis Paulson, who tripled twice. Katie Witt, who recently tore several ligaments in her knee, returned with a brace and collected two hits on the day in a designated hitter role.
Katrina Sathoff pitched 11.1 innings, striking out nine while allowing 9 runs (3 earned). Sophie Golembiewski tossed four innings against Pearl City and another against Orangeville. Ambrose tallied 3.2 innings in the pitcher’s circle.
Argyle used Mya McNett as its main starting pitcher on the day. McNett pitched 12.2 innings on the day, striking out seven and allowing 13 runs (8 earned). Grace Ganshert threw 6.2 innings with 12 strikeouts. At the plate, Megan Johnson and Maggie Godfrey each had four hits on the day. Chesney Leigh had a 3-hit game against Monroe. Godfrey and Ava Wiegel each doubled for the Orioles.
Argyle 5, Potosi-Cassville 4
ARGYLE — Hannah Gierhart and Jenny Helfvogt each had two hits to lead the Orioles to a Six Rivers crossover win April 21. Gierhart and Lindsay Connors each doubled. Ganshert struck out five while allowing just one earned run on the hill for the Orioles.
Edgewood 11, Monroe 10
MADISON — On April 21, the Cheesemakers failed to rally against the Crusaders in a Badger West game. Paulson crushed two homers and finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. Ambrose added two hits, while Sathoff had a double and two walks with three steals. Golembiewski and Ambrose each tossed three innings. Edgewood out-hit Monroe 12-10, while the Cheesemakers committed four errors defensive.

WHITEWATER — The Cardinals swept the Whippets April 23 in a Rock Valley doubleheader. McKenna Young tossed a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the 12-1 victory. Back-to-back errors in the second scored Whitewater’s lone run. In the 11-0 opener, Young allowed one hit and walked two while striking out 16. No other Whippets reached base. Sophia Leitzen had a home run, a triple and four hits on the day, while Taetum Hoesly tripled and reached base five times. Young had two triples, four hits and four steals at the plate. Cora Hafen had four hits, including a double, and drove in five runners.
Brodhead 11, McFarland 0
BRODHEAD — Leitzen and Young homered as the Cardinals rolled McFarland in a Rock Valley game April 21. Leizten drove in three, while Young drove in two. Daisy Nelson had two hits, including a double. Ava Risum struck out five in three innings pitching, while Leitzen struck out two in two innings.
Monticello-New Glarus loses three
SHULLSBURG — Monticello-New Glarus lost to Benton-Shullsburg twice in three days, 6-5 and 4-0, with a 12-0 loss to Mineral Point added in there. Melanie Fink had three hits and Brea McCoy drove in three runs.
Pec wins twice
LODI — Pecatonica won a road game at River Ridge April 21, 4-1, and then held off Lodi 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel two days later. Chloe Schraepfer was in ace form, pitching all 14 innings while striking out 27 batters and allowing just four hits and a walk. Lexi Peterson had two hits, including a double and a triple.
Mineral Point 10, Darlington 0
MINERAL POINT — The Pointers used a 5-run second inning to propel themselves beyond the Redbirds April 21. Sophie Wiegel allowed six earned runs with two strikeouts on the mound for Darlington. Greta Volkening had two hits for the Redbirds.
