WISCONSIN DELLS — Two of the state’s top-ranked teams faced off Jan. 19 at JustAgame Fieldhouse, with Black Hawk defeating Melrose-Mindoro in a nonconference bout 60-42.

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in Division 5 in the WisSports.net Coaches poll, and second in the Associated Press poll, used a strong second half to pull away from Melrose-Mindoro, the second ranked team in Division 4 in both polls. The Mustangs were held to more than 25 points below their points per game average thanks to the vaunted Warriors defense.

Black Hawk led 29-25 after a grueling first half, but held Melrose-Mindoro to just 17 points in the second half.

Bailey Butler led the Warriors with 20 points thanks to 9 of 10 shooting from the free throw line and a 3-for-8 mark from deep. Butler struggled otherwise, hitting just 1 of 17 shots from 2-point range. She also snagged seven rebounds.

Natalie Leuzinger had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for Black Hawk (15-0). Hannah Butler had 10 boards and seven points on 2 of 11 shooting with three free throws. The Warriors as a team struggled from the field, hitting just 13 of 62 total shots — less than 21 percent. Black Hawk was 7 of 22 from deep (31.8 percent), but hit a strong 27 of 38 free throws (71 percent).

Melrose-Mindoro (13-1) was led in scoring by UW-Milwaukee recruit Calette Lockington, who had 13 points. South Dakota State signee Mesa Byom had 10, UW-Whitewater commit Erika Simmons scored nine and UW-Stout commit Katie Christopherson was held 10 points below her career average with just five.

New Glarus 60, Cambridge 41

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights had four players reach double figures, and New Glarus used a strong second half to fend off the Blue Jays and grab an important Capitol South Conference win Jan. 17.

Jaylynn Benson scored 19 to lead the Knights, while teammates Lexi Krause (11), Morgan Hustad (11) and Lilly Himmelmann (10) also lit up the scoreboard.

New Glarus led just 22-21 at the end of the first half but outscored Cambridge 38-20 in the second half.

Benson scored 15 points in the second half, while Krause had nine. The Knights were 16-for-21 in the game from the charity stripe, which included 16 of 19 in the second half and a blistering 10 of 11 down the stretch.
