MCFARLAND — The Cheesemakers took care of business yet again in Week 3, but the armored vehicle of the state’s top-ranked D3 team took another dent on the season’s drive. George Brukwicki, the team’s starting QB and CB, was injured in the first half and did not return in Monroe’s 36-0 route of McFarland on Sept. 2.
Brukwicki’s replacement, Ethan Rosenstiel, completed a pair of passes for 33 yards and managed the offense with no major blemishes while filling in. He also picked up a key fourth-down conversion by turning a rollout pass into a scramble for the first-down marker that kept a drive alive.
Senior fullback Alex Hernandez led the way on the ground, pounding out 163 yards on 23 carries, scoring a touchdown. Kaden Kuester had four carries for 19 yards and two scores, while Keatin Sweeney touched the ball eight times for 52 yards and two scores. Lane Meyer added 47 yards on five rushing attempts, and Tucker Markham collected 50 yards on just three carries, as the Cheesemakers spread the rock around.
Markham led Monroe’s defense with eight tackles. Charlie Wiegel and Aaron Benzschawel each had a sack. The Cheesemakers kept the speedy Spartans to just 79 yards of offense, including -2 yards on 19 carries. McFarland starting QB Cooper Kennedy was 3 of 4 passing for 19 yards before getting hurt just a few plays after Brukwicki. Replacement Bray Roder was 5 of 10 for 62 yards in Kennedy’s stead.
Monroe returns home for back-to-back games in Weeks 4-5. Evansville comes to town Sept. 9, with Jefferson stopping by on Cheese Days weekend, Sept. 16.
