NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights defeated the Mineral Pointers, 4-2 on Wednesday, June 4 in a WIAA Division 3 Regional Final to advance to the regional championship.

Mineral Point (No. 5 seed) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning over New Glarus (No. 4 seed) when SS Adam Cody ripped a double and scored on an error. The score stayed at 1-0 until the fourth inning. That’s when the Glarner Knights scored a pair of runs and grabbed a 2-1 advantage. First baseman Braden Rear walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a base hit by 2B Brock Roth. Another run scored when 3B Nathan Hendrickson, who had reached on a bunt, later scored on an error.

Leading 2-1, the Knights got some breathing room in the sixth inning with two runs. Rear led off the inning with a base hit and pinch runner Liam Crawford advanced to second on a sacrifice by Hendrickson. Crawford moved to third on a groundout. After Kamm Hehmer walked, RF Ethan Colstad drove in both runners with a double to center, giving the Glarner Knights a 4-1 cushion.

Starting pitcher Patrick Alt, a senior, was able to work his way out of a tough seventh inning, allowing one run, but got the complete game victory. Alt gave up two runs on six hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

The Glarner Knights (16-7) were scheduled to play against No. 1 seed Fennimore at UW-Platteville on Thursday, June 5 for the Regional Championship. The sectional tournament will be played on Tuesday, June 10 at Merchants Park in Osseo. The games will be played at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and the sectional final at 4 p.m.

Palmyra-Eagle Edges Pecatonica In Regional Semifinal

PALMYRA — The Palmyra-Eagles Panthers got only two hits, but it was just enough to knock the Pecatonica Vikings out of the playoffs Tuesday, June 3 as the Panthers got by the Vikings 2-1 in a WIAA Division 4 Regional semifinal. Pitcher Devin Patrick got a base hit and 1B Dylan Walsh hit a double and LF Brett Johnson drove them both in during separate at-bats to give the Panthers (No. 4 seed) the runs they needed in the second and fourth innings to get by the Vikings (No. 5 seed).

Pecatonica batters recorded only two hits. Shortstop Ashton McNett doubled and scored on CF Griffin Noll’s RBI in the fifth inning. The only other base runners for the Vikings were DH Drew Hendrickson who got on with a base hit and 3B Reid Schlimgen who reached on a walk. McNett also got on board when he was hit by a pitch.

Junior Austin Enloe started on the mound for Pecatonica and took the loss. Enloe allowed two runs (one earned), two hits, two walks, and struck out two. The loss brought the season to a close for the Vikings with a record of 13-13.
