BRODHEAD — The New Glarus and Brodhead rivalry added another chapter to its saga, as the Knights defeated the Cardinals 76-56 in a nonconference game on Saturday, Dec. 10.

In the 2022-23 season, New Glarus knocked Brodhead out of the playoffs with a 61-47 win in the regional final. During the regular season, the Cardinals defeated the Knights on New Glarus’ court 51-36.

This season in volleyball, Brodhead defeated New Glarus in three sets for the regional title.

“After the regional championship last year where we beat them, we expected them to be mad and want some revenge,” senior Grace Nommensen said. “Personally, getting beat here twice in the regional championship it gave me even more incentive to win.”

New Glarus jumped out to an 11-0 lead, sparked by a 3-pointer by Lindsey Schadewalt. Alex Atwell then scored the next eight points, finding the open spots on the court for easy buckets.

“She [Atwell] is a spark,” New Glarus head coach Kevin Parman said. “Just the way they all share the ball with each other is amazing. I don’t think, really, it matters this year who it is, which is really nice. We are continuing to work on finding that open person and moving without the ball.”

Abbie Dix provided Brodhead its first points, buy New Glarus continued its onslaught. Nommensen and Elle Lancaster each made a layup and, paired with another three from Schadewalt, the Knights took an 18-2 lead.

The Cardinals got back within 10, as Dix and Makenna Schooff made a pair of free-throws in addition to a Schooff bucket.

Brodhead gathered some momentum with a charge taken by Alexis Kammerer. The Cardinals then moved the ball on offense, leading to a wide-open bunny for Schoof.

Yates ended the half at the free-throw line, going 2-for-2, as New Glarus led 38-27.

Atwell sparked the second half for the Knights, too, assisting Nommensen and turning a defensive steal into two points. Dix was the source of the Cardinals’ offense in the early in second. She went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and converted from the field.

Brodhead ran into foul trouble, though, giving New Glarus an edge. Dix, Schooff and Kammerer each picked up their third fouls in near succession. Offensively, Nommensen made a free throw, while Lancaster finished a 3-point play at the charity stripe.

The Knights continued to cause havoc on both ends of the court. The Cardinals turned the ball over at the top of the key with pressure from Lancaster and Bella Brenkman, forcing a timeout. Meanwhile, Schadewalt continued her offensive prowess with a pair of threes.

The final dagger came with eight minutes left in the game, as Schadewalt drew Dix’s fifth foul. Despite being double-teamed in the post the entire game, Dix left the game with a team-high 19 points.

“Abbie, physically, is probably one of the strongest post players in the area,” Brodhead head coach Brian Kammerer said. “We still probably didn’t get Abbie enough touches. The shots that she made were tough with defenders on her, going through two people.”

In her subsequent trip to the free-throw line, Schadewalt went 2-for-2.

Off the Knight bench, Payton Schneider went to the charity stripe for a point and added three more with a shot made beyond the arc. Schadewalt followed suit, in reverse order, to give New Glarus a 69-43 lead.

Brodhead rattled off six unanswered points, three each from Onnika Williams and Alexis Kammerer to close the gap to 20 points. That’s the closest the Cardinals got, though, as New Glarus won 76-56.

Schadewalt and Atwell scored 23 points each to lead the Knights. Lancaster also scored in double figures with 11 points. Nommensen and Schneider chipped in with six points each.

Dix fought through tough defense to score 19 points, going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Yates trailed with 13 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
