Knights defensive pressure too staunch for Vikings

BLANCHARDVILLE — Senior Milo Johnson scored three touchdowns and the New Glarus Glarner Knights kept Pecatonica-Argyle out of the end zone in a 49-0 rout in which the Knights got their biggest point total since 2020. New Glarus wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as senior Will Pinnow scored on a 24-yard touchdown pass less that two minutes into the game for a 6-0 lead. The Vikings first possession looked promising as they reached the Glarner Knights’ 30-yard line, but a sack and an incomplete pass stalled the drive around midfield and the Vikings had to punt.

The Glarner Knights turned the ball over on downs and the Vikings had another drive end around midfield. When the Vikings tried to punt, there was a bad snap and New Glarus took over on the Pec-Argyle 40-yard line. That led to the first of three Milo Johnson touchdowns as Johnson ran it in from 22-yards out and Tucker Sysko caught a pass for a two-point extra point and New Glarus led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter, junior Tyse Hosely intercepted a Martin Anderson pass and Johnson scored on a 31-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good and the Knights had a 21-0 lead with 11:01 left in the first half. Sophomore Jacob Staff intercepted a pass and returned it to the 20-yard line to set up another drive by the Glarner Knights. Despite a penalty on New Glarus to put them back to the 15, New Glarus needed just seven plays to score. Pinnow had a 38-yard reception and junior Quinn Marty hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Glarner Knights a 28-0 lead with 3:57 left in the first half.

The Vikings tried to get on the board before halftime with a drive that started at their own 47 and reached the New Glarus 26 in the final seconds of the half. But, an intentional grounding penalty and an incomplete pass kept the Vikings off the board as the half ended.

In the second half, Johnson cruised 39 yards for a touchdown with 6:19 left in the second quarter. The extra point was good, making the score 35-0 and activating the running clock. With 9:34 to go, senior Luke Burton scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to put New Glarus up 42-0 and with 1:48 remaining, sophomore Kamm Nehmer grabbed a 6-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Brock Roth to make the final 49-0.

After the game, New Glarus head coach D.J. Schuett talked about Milo Johnson and his team’s running game.

“Milo is probably our featured running back but we have a stable this year with a lot of good running backs and skill position players and this is probably the deepest offensive line we’ve had. It’s a little bit easier to coach when you have some talent. We’ll see where this year goes,” said Schuett.

Offensively, the Vikings got into New Glarus territory four times in the first half, but their deepest penetration for the game was the New Glarus 27-yard line. Vikings coach Mark Stateler credited New Glarus with running their sweeps well.

“We just couldn’t put it together in the end. I think conditioning is a big deal. It think our guys got gassed in the first half and couldn’t turn the corner from that,” Stateler said.

Pecatonica-Argyle (0-1) will have a Thursday night game at Waterloo on Aug. 28, while New Glarus (1-0) will be on the road for a nonconference rivalry game at Belleville on Friday, Aug. 29.
