FENNIMORE — The New Glarus Glarner Knights had hopes of reaching the sectionals in baseball for a second straight year. But, the Fennimore Golden Eagles blocked the Knights path by defeating New Glarus 4-2 in a Division 3 regional championship, 4-2 on Thursday, June 5.

Senior Ethan Sheckler, named SWAL Player of the Year earlier in the week, held the Glarner Knights (No. 4 seed) in check by firing a one-hitter. Junior Ashlin Mihlbauer got the only hit of the game for the Knights, but New Glarus did get baserunners against Scheckler with six walks.

The game began was pitchers duel between Scheckler and New Glarus sophomore Nolan Julseth. It was a scoreless tie through three innings before the Glarner Knights broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ethan Colstad scored a run on Patrick Alt’s RBI and Julseth made it 2-0 by scoring on Mihlbauer’s RBI single. But Fennimore (No. 1 seed) tied it 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Eagles went ahead with a run in the fifth and got an insurance run in the sixth. Three of Fennimore’s four runs were unearned as the Glarner Knights committed three errors.
