NEW GLARUS — The Knights rallied from an early first-set deficit to come back and sweep Iowa-Grant in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 girls volleyball tournament Oct. 19, 25-19, 25-13, 25-14.

“After a busy week last week playing both Wisconsin Heights and Marshall, earning two wins on the road, we were ready host the regional game,” said New Glarus coach Kayla Zimmerman.

Iowa-Grant called a timeout after New Glarus rallied to tie it at 15, but the Glarner Knights did not give back the momentum, outscoring the Panthers 10-4 down the stretch in the first set, then onto the second and third sets.

“Our passers from the back row really did a nice job putting the passes into our setters’ hands,” Zimmerman said. Co-setters Lindsey Schadewalt and Grace Nommensen area unique and versatile pair, Zimmerman said, which helps both the offense and defense flow better. “They are both so quick and athletic, and they did a fantastic job tonight as outside hitters and as setters, where they created a balanced attack using all of our hitters.”

Schadewalt finished the night with 22 assists and two aces. Nommensen had 15 kills, six assists and 11 digs. Up front, Emma Marty tallied six kills and seven digs, while Amber Horn matched Marty in kills and digs and added three blocks and two aces.

“In addition to our net play, we served extremely well from behind the end line. The players really played with confidence tonight. It was clear that they were having a lot of fun,” Zimmerman said. “We had a nice home crowd, too, and even the high school pep band made an appearance.”
