MADISON — Monroe’s two flights that advanced to the WIAA Division 2 state meet didn’t make it through the first round on June 5, but their friends, family and local supporters showed up in droves anyway.

At No. 1 singles, Matthew Setterstrom fell in two sets to New Berlin Eisenhower’s Aidan Metcalf, 6-1, 7-5. Metcalf would bow out in the following round.

At No. 1 doubles, Carsen Bartholf and Hamilton Stites, both juniors, lost a heart-breaking tie-breaker to New Berlin West’s Tyler Hall and Aris Ziogas, 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-4. The New Berlin duo made it to the third round before losing to eventual state champions Finn Milleman and Brady Latus of Catholic Memorial.

“Both Matthew at singles and Carsen and Hamilton at doubles battled with tough draws but could not win their opening round matches,” Monroe athletic director Eric Jubeck said. “However, a great season for the team and a wonderful opportunity to compete at state.”

The season was Monroe’s most successful under coach Matthew Bordner, who learned the sport on the job nearly 10 years ago. Jubeck said Bordner’s efforts have built a strong program. Case-in-point: Bordner earned the Rock Valley Conference Coach of the Year Award this season.

“This is his first time winning this award, very deserving — as the team was right there for a conference championship and also had great postseason success” Jubeck said.
