MADISON — The Cheesemakers got revenge for their first loss of the season, knocking off Waunakee 70-68 in the Badger Conference Challenge Jan. 25 at Edgewood High School.

Waunakee, which received votes in the Jan. 21 Associated Press Division 1 poll, led much of the game, including by 12 in the first half alone. Monroe, ranked ninth in the AP poll in Division 2, never gave in and sophomore guard Carson Leuzinger took care of business down the stretch.

Leuzinger was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line in the closing minutes of the game, scoring 13 total points in the half. Cade Meyer led Monroe with 16 points, while JT Seagreaves had 15 and Max Golembiewski 10.

Caden Nelson and Jaxson Zibell each had 18 to lead the Warriors (11-4), which led 36-31 at halftime.

The win came just one night after the Cheesemakers (11-3) suffered a road loss at Milwaukee Bay View (8-6), 83-77. Due to hazardous winter conditions, Monroe didn’t return home until nearly 1 a.m., only to hop on the bus to Madison just over 12 hours later.

Meyer led Monroe with 21 points. Golembiewski scored 17, and Leuzinger and Seagreaves each added 14.

LIVINGSTON — Three Redbirds recorded double-doubles in a blowout of the Panthers Jan. 24. Cayden Rankin scored 25 points and had 14 rebounds while Carter Lancaster had 23/13 and Curtis Stone 10/11. Stone’s eight assists left him two shy of the rare triple-double.

Rankin was 10 of 19 from the field, while Lancaster was 9 of 18.

Darlington (13-1, 7-1 SWAL) was just 3 of 9 from beyond the arc but dominated the glass against Iowa-Grant (8-6, 3-5), out-rebounding the home team 49-20.

New Glarus 52, Marshall 49

MARSHALL — The Glarner Knights stayed unbeaten in Capitol South play with a comeback road win Jan. 24.

“It was a back-and-forth game all night,” New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said.

The Knights trailed 24-22 at halftime, but were able to take the lead with less than 35 seconds to play on a layup by Mason Martinson. Moments later Nathan Streiff hit a pair of free throws to make it a 3-point game. Marshall was unable to convert on its final possession.

Connor Siegenthaler led all scorers with 18 points, including the only 3-pointer in the game for New Glarus (6-5, 3-0) late in the second half. Streiff finished with 15 points, while Martinson had 11.
