Monroe tips Fort, loses DH to LM

MONROE — The Cheesemakers beat Fort Atkinson May 7 4-3 at home, then lost a pair to Lake Mills in a doubleheader the next day.

In the win over Fort Atkinson, Preston Ambrose had two hits and Trevor Schmitt drove in two runs for the Cheesemakers, while Charles Briggs reached base three times on a hit, walk and hit by pitch.

George Brukwicki tossed a complete game to get the win, striking out four while allowing six hits, three walks and three unearned runs. 

Fort scored twice in the top of the second, but Monroe tied it with a 2-run third inning. The Cheesemakers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Brukwicki got out of the seventh after allowing a single run.

The next day, the Cheesemakers dropped a doubleheader to Lake Mills 3-1 and 13-3. The contest was originally scheduled to be against Warren, but changes were made in the days leading up to the games.

In the 13-3 loss, Ethan Mapel pitched two innings for Monroe and Colin Foley tossed the other three for Monroe. The pair allowed seven earned runs on 13 hits and four walks.

Lake Mills jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, and then scored two in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth. Monroe was only able to muster two runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the 10-run mercy rule going into effect after the third out.

In the 3-1 loss, Max Golembiewski had two hits of the Cheesemakers’ four hits. Charles Briggs hit a double.

Golembiewski also tossed a solid game on the hill, allowing just three hits in six innings with four walks and five strikeouts. Two of the three runs were earned.

Lake Mills scored a run in the third and added two more in the fourth inning. Monroe’s lone run came in the seventh, when Tyler Matley brought home Briggs.


Pecatonica 9, Highland 3

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings swept the Cardinals in a pair of 5-inning Six Rivers crossover games May 7.  Pecatonica never trailed in either game.

Dakota Doescher was 4-for-5 on the night for the Vikings with 5 RBIs and two steals. Bryce Johnsrud had 3 hits, while Elijah Kutson, Coy Ruegsegger, Kegun Brunker and Hunter Enloe each had two hits. Brunker had four steals on the night. 

In the 9-3 win, Ruegsegger went the distance, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Knutson allowed six hits with no walks and a strikeout in his five innings of work in the 8-3 win.


Darlington 13, Iowa-Grant 3

LIVINGSTON — The Redbirds took advantage of 12 errors and 25 hits to put up 36 runs in a doubleheader May 7.

Gage Banfield, Hunter Hardyman and Carter Lancaster had four hits each for Darlington, while Braden Davis, Brady Horne and Cayden Rankin each had three. Hardyman had five RBIs on the night while Davis had four. Davis also homered, while Lancaster, Banfield and Tye Crist collected doubles. Rankin also had four steals.

In the 23-11 win, Hardyman was tagged for four runs on four walks in 1/3 of an inning. James Hartwig tossed an inning in relief, allowing five runs on five walks and two hits. Breylin Goebel worked 3.2 innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs to score on 83 pitches. Lancaster threw the final two innings, scattering two walks and a hit.

In the 13-3 victory, Banfield threw 5.2 innings on the mound, striking out six and scattering three walks and five hits, allowing three runs with just one earned. Goebel needed one pitch to finish the game in relief.

Iowa-Grant took a 7-2 lead after the first inning in the opener, but Darlington scored four, seven and five runs over the next three innings to go up 18-11. The Redbirds added another run in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Darlington led 1-0 after the first and 3-0 after two innings. Iowa-Grant scored a run in the top of the third, but the Redbirds counted with four in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-run fifth by Iowa-Grant made it 7-3, but the Redbirds walked it off with a six-run sixth inning.


Highland 11, Argyle 1

HIGHLAND — The Orioles dropped a pair of nonconference games, first with a mercy rule loss at Highland May 6, then a 7-run defeat the next day at Cambridge.

Will Helfvogt had three hits in the two games while Jayden Johnson had two hits, including a double. Clay Ritschard had a hit and two walks and scored twice.

In the loss to Highland, Johnson was tagged for seven runs on the mound in 1.2 innings of work, allowing six walks and six hits. Helfvogt pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Orioles, striking out five and ceding four runs.

Max Godfrey allowed five runs (two earned) in three innings of work at Cambridge with five walks and five hits. Ritschard threw the final three innings, striking out three and allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits, two walks, and two hit batters.


Evansville 11, Brodhead-Juda 5

EVANSVILLE — A seven-run second inning positioned the Blue Devils for a Rock Valley win over the Cardinals May 7.

Brodhead-Juda took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and in the next frame following Evansville’s 7-run outburst, the Cardinals plated three more runners to keep it close at 7-5. Evansville then scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Cardinals were blanked at the plate after that.

Ryan Searles had two hits for the Cardinals, while Evan Senobe had two RBIs. 

Brady Malkow started for the Cards and allowed seven runs — just one earned — in four innings of work on 99 pitches. Malkow struck out nine batters but gave up five hits and five walks. Mason Kammerer was tagged for two earned runs after walking two batters and with a wild pitch on just nine pitches in the fifth inning. He was replaced by Kohen Sawle, who threw the final two innings for the Cardinals, who allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk.


Belmont 23, Monticello-Albany 2

NEW GLARUS — The Ponies/Comets co-op has struggled to open the season, allowing 84 runs through just three games. 

On May 6, Belmont led 6-2 after the second inning, then scored 11 runs in the third and four more in the fourth to end the game early. Brayden Bakken and Jacob Letcher had Monticello-Albany’s only hits in the game, with Letcher tallying both RBIs with a 2-run home run in the top of the second inning.

Carson Gafner, Peyton Smith and Tyler Anderson all pitched for M/A, allowing 16 earned runs on 18 hits and eight walks with just two strikeouts. 

On May 8, New Glarus no-hit M/A behind the pitching efforts of Eli Zimmerman and Kylo Barker. Zimmerman pitched two innings, walked three batters and recorded all six outs via the strikeout. Barker struck out seven in three innings of work.

Leyton Mihlbauer was 4-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and four runs. Peyton Mendleski was also 4-for-4, adding a walk, five RBIs and five runs for the Knights. Cooper Dreyfus walked four times and scored five runs, while Easton Dreyfus walked four times and scored four runs. Nathan Streiff hit a triple, walked, scored twice and drove in two. Barker also had three RBIs.

Six M/A pitchers took the mound, allowing 20 earned runs on 16 walks, 13 hits and two hit batters. M/A committed six errors in the game.

New Glarus scored four runs in the first inning, five in the second and four more in the third. In the fourth inning, the Knights batted around the order twice, scoring 15 times and left the bases loaded.
