Monroe swept at Stoughton tourney

STOUGHTON — The Monroe Cheesemakers found themselves down 4-0 in the second period and couldn’t find enough offense to overtake the Beaver Dam Golden Beavers 6-3 in nonconference boys hockey in Stoughton on Tuesday Dec. 30.

The Cheesemakers didn’t get on the board until 1:49 in the second period when senior Brady Stuart got a power play goal assisted by senior Brody Koehn and senior Owen Hicks. By that time, Monroe trailed 4-1, but the Cheesemakers struck again quickly as senior Brody Goode scored a minute and a half later with an assist by senior Hans Brandt to get the Cheese to within 4-2. 

Beaver Dam got a goal a minute into the third period to take a 5-2 lead. The Cheesemakers answered with a goal by Brandt on an assist by Koehn to make it 5-3. The Cheesemakers tried to rally with an extra attacker, but the Golden Beavers got an empty net goal with 1:17 remaining to make the final 6-3.

Sophomore goalie Brogan Hoelscher made 24 saves while the Cheesemakers got 42 shots on goal.

Monroe (1-8) hosted Beloit Memorial on Saturday Jan. 3.


Beloit Memorial 9, Monroe 6

STOUGHTON — The Beloit Memorial Purple Knights upended the Cheesemakers 9-6 at Stoughton in nonconference boys hockey action on Monday Dec. 29. Even though the Cheesemakers took a 1-0 lead early and held a 3-2 lead after one period, the Purple Knights struck for six goals in the second period to keep the Cheese at bay.

Freshman Lane Schilt got the Cheesemakers started with a goal 3:00 into the game with assists by senior Brody Koehn and senior Tysen Folgate to give Monroe a 1-0 lead. Beloit Memorial scored a goal at 8:57 to tie it at 1-1. The Cheesemakers took a 2-1 lead on sophomore Tucker Mallory’s unassisted goal 20 seconds later. A minute later, Beloit Memorial got a goal to tie it at 2-2. Monroe re-claimed the lead at 3-2 on senior Brock Brandli’s goal at 14:28 assisted by Koehn and senior Brody Goode.

The second period was a defensive nightmare for the Cheesemakers as the Purple Knights scored six times, including two times on a power play. Monroe did score two goals in the second period as senior Hans Brandt put the puck in the net on an assist by Koehn at 4:25 and Suart got a power play goal at 10:06 on assists by Brandt and senior Brody Goode to go into the third period trailing 8-5.

Two minutes into the third period, the Cheesemakers closed to within 8-6 as Koehn delivered a goal with an assist by Schilt, but that would be the last time the Cheese would score. Beloit Memorial got a power play goal at 10:33 to make it a 9-6 final.

The Cheesemakers got 40 shots on goal and sophomore Brogan Hoelscher made 24 saves.
