Cheesemakers Top Cougars
Seven players drove in a run for the Monroe Cheesemakers in an 8-5 win over the Clinton Cougars in non-conference baseball on May 9. Owen Hicks drove in a run with a triple and scored two runs and pitched 5 and 2/3 quality innings to lead the Cheesemakers. Hicks allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out five to get the win. Senior Cam Newcomer got a hit, an RBI, and scored a run. Senior shortstop Ashton Hale had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run. Junior Marcus Ott started in center field and walked four times, driving in a run and scored a run for the Cheese. A four-run third inning played a big part in the win for the Cheesemakers. Monroe played another nonconference game on May 12 at home against Dodgeville before traveling to Delavan-Darien for some RVC-Valley Division action May 13.
Cheesemakers Lose Second Straight Game To Jefferson
The Monroe Cheesemakers were handcuffed by Jefferson for a second straight game and lost to the Eagles, 11-1 in RVC-Valley baseball at Monroe on May 8. The Cheesemakers got only three hits — by Marcus Ott, Zane Seffrood, and Eli Schaefer to score their lone run in the third inning. The only other base runners for the Cheesemakers were Cam Newcomer and Owen Douglas who got on base with walks. The Cheesemakers dropped to 2-2 in the RVC-Valley Division, and 8-5 overall with the loss.
Brodhead Juda Goes 1-3 In Baseball Thursday-Friday-Saturday
The Brodhead-Juda Cardinals lost three of four games played last week. On May 8, the Cardinals hung on for an 11-9 win over Evansville in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division action. The Cardinals had an 11-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning when the Blue Devils went off for seven runs against Cardinal relievers Parker Vanderpal and Clayton Elliot. But, the rally fell short and the Cardinals picked up a conference win. Centerfielder David Masloske, Second baseman Chase Bauman, and first baseman Max Pinnow each drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Starting pitcher Brooks Malkow pitched six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. Brodhead-Juda improved to 3-2 in the RVC-Rock with the win.
On May 9, the Cardinals ran into RVC-Valley co-leader Jefferson and lost 7-1. Catcher Gabe Bockhop got a double, but no other player for the Cardinals got an extra-base hit. David Masloske scored Brodhead-Juda’s only run in the seventh inning.
The Cardinals played two games in the Mineral Point Triangular on May 10 and lost both games. First, was a 14-5 loss to Mount Horeb. Masloske went 3x4 with a double and scored three runs for Brodhead-Juda. Shortstop Sam Searls had a big day, going 2x4 with four RBIs.
In their second game of the Mineral Point Triangular, the Cardinals faced the Mineral Point Pointers and came up short, 5-4. The Pointers erased a 4-3 deficit going into the bottom of the seventh inning and scored two runs to get the come-from-behind win. Rightfielder Parker Vanderpal hit a three-run homer and Bockhop added two hits along with an RBI to lead Brodhead-Juda. The loss dropped the Cardinals to the .500 mark at 9-9 on the season. Brodhead-Juda got back into conference action with a game at Clinton on May 13.
Potosi Cassville Dominates in 16-0 Win Over Argyle-Black Hawk
The Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles could only come up with two hits in a 16-0 loss to Potosi-Cassville in Six Rivers conference baseball on May 9. Ike Waage and Trent Bidlingmair got base hits and Mikey Helfvogt drew a walk to account for the only baserunners in the game for the Orioles. The loss was the fifth straight for Argyle-Black Hawk and the 10th time they’ve suffered a shutout loss this season. Argyle-Black Hawk fell to 1-13 in the Six Rivers conference and 1-15 overall. The Orioles played a conference game at home against Barneveld on May 12 and a nonconference game at Lena-Winslow on May 13.
Darlington Redbirds Take 13-7 Conference Win Over Boscobel
The Darlington Redbirds withstood a six-run second inning by the Boscobel Bulldogs and turned it into a 13-7 win in SWAL conference baseball at Boscobel on May 9. The Redbirds scored seven runs in the second inning and added six more runs over the final three innings. Calum Crist knocked in three runs and Zeke Zuberbuhler went 3x4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Redbirds. Catcher Sloan Glendenning had two doubles and an RBI and Maddox Goebel had a double among his two hits to go with two RBIs. Dante Glendenning, Crist, and Zuberbuhler combined to strike out nine batters and allowed no earned runs. Darlington is 2-7 in the SWAL and 5-11 overall. Darlington played at Cuba City in SWAL action on May 13.
Belleville Holds On For 5-4 Win Over Poynette
The Belleville Wildcats got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning which allowed them to hold on for a 5-4 win over the Poynette Pumas in nonconference baseball on May 8. Shortstop Niles Monroe got an RBI triple and scored two runs while Brennan Keyes and Austin McKinley each drove in a run for Belleville. Starting pitcher Marcus Hebgen allowed one earned run and struck out five batters while Trei Udelhoven and Austin McKinley pitched the final three innings and allowed just one run. The win improved Belleville’s overall record to 6-11 with a nonconference game at home against Stoughton on May 12 and a conference game at Waterloo on May 13.
Highland Defeats Pecatonica 6-2
Junior Ashton McNett hit a solo homer in the third inning, but the Highland Cardinals scored two runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 6-2 win over the Pecatonica Vikings in Six Rivers conference baseball on May 9 at Highland. Second baseman Reid Schlimgen got a hit and an RBI for the Vikings. Designated hitter Drew Hendrickson walked and scored for Pec. The Vikings fell to 7-6 in the Six Rivers conference and 10-8 overall. The Vikings are at Barneveld in Six Rivers Conference action on May 13.
New Glarus Gets Non-Conference Win Against Johnson Creek
The New Glarus Glarner Knights defeated the Johnson Creek Blue Jays 8-4 in nonconference baseball on May 9. The Glarner Knights opened the scoring in the first inning after junior Landon Stelter singled, scoring one run. New Glarus extended their early lead with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI singles by Ethan Colstad and Stelter. Sophomore Nolan Julseth earned the win for the Knights. The starting pitcher surrendered three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out five and walking two. Brock Roth got the save in relief. Stelter led New Glarus with three hits in three at bats. The Glarner Knights ran wild on the base paths, collecting six stolen bases for the game. The Glarner Knights will travel to Cambridge for Capitol South Conference action on May 13.
