Monroe solid in ‘W’ over McFarland

MONROE — Four Cheesemakers reached double digits in a 68-53 nonconference win over McFarland Jan. 21. 

Megan Benzschawel led the way with 17 points, while Taylor Jacobson, Grace Tostrud and Chloe Bunker each scored 12 points. Benzschawel added eight rebounds, four steals and a block. Tostrud had nine rebounds and two steals. Bunker was a perfect 6 for 6 from the field with four rebounds and two assists off the bench.

Both teams traded baskets throughout much of the first half, but the Cheesemakers (5-6) pulled away over the final five minutes leading into halftime and took a 35-25 advantage to the locker room. Monroe made just two 3-pointers in the game and shot 41% from the field. Monroe was 14 of 19 from the charity stripe.

Katie Hildebrandt led McFarland (5-9) with 16 points. Lindsey Lonigro had 13 points and Adrienne Kirch added 12 for the Spartans.

The Cheesemakers jump back into the conference slate with a home game against Fort Atkinson Jan. 23. Back-to-back nonconference makeups are next, with the Badger Challenge game at Mount Horeb Jan. 27 and a game at Freeport Jan. 30. The five-game road trip continues with games at Oregon (Feb. 1), Edgewood (Feb. 4) and Monona Grove (Feb. 7).
