MONROE — The Cheesemakers opened up their season with a 121-49 win over Platteville-Lancaster in a dual meet Aug. 16.
Monroe-New Glarus won 10 of the 11 events despite changing up the swim order.
“Tonight’s meet was one of discovery,” Cheesemakers coach Linda Moser said Thursday. “The girls swam events that they necessarily didn’t swim on a regular basis. Several swimmers swam events they haven’t focused on before. They did a great job in the water not showing how nervous they really were.”
Monroe won all four relay events, starting with the 200-meter medley. Freshmen Morgan Erstad, Peyton Yaun and Karley Michels teamed with senior Cammi Ganshert to win the 200 medley in a time of 2 minutes, 15:35 seconds. In the 200 free relay, Michels, freshman Alyssa Roelli and sophomores Anna Newcomer and sophomore Francesca Schiro took first place with a time of 2:00.95. Erstad, Roelli, Michels and senior Nina Schiro won the 400 freestyle relay (4:28.79) by nearly 14 seconds.
Erstad added an 18-second win in the 200 individual medley (2:35.28) and a 17-second win in the 100 backstroke (1:08.51). Fellow freshmen Alyssa Roelli won the 50 freestyle by 0.22 seconds, finishing with a time of 29.24 for the Cheesemakers. Michels won the 100 breaststroke (1:24.42).
“With 12 freshmen that first meet can be daunting, but the freshman clearly showed what they are capable of in the water,” Moser said. “I am so proud of what they did tonight and they should be too.”
Francesca Schiro won the 200 free (2:23.08), finishing ahead of two teammates that took second and third place. Schiro added a win in the 100 free (1:04.32), beating Ganshert by less than three seconds.
Nina Schiro won the 400 free (5:17.98).
Monroe-New Glarus jumped back into the water Tuesday against Milton in the first conference meet of the season, and the Cheesemakers next meet is Aug. 28 at McFarland.
