Monroe goes 2-1 at home tournament

MONROE — The Cheesemakers went 2-2 over the weekend. Monroe lost a May 14 conference game at Milton 12-0, then went 2-1 at its six-team tournament May 15. The Cheesemakers beat Watertown 16-15 and Tomahawk 8-3, but lost to Verona 13-2.

Monroe was held to just two hits in the loss to Milton, with seniors Alyse Maurer and Sydney Updike collecting each hit. Emma Wild took the loss on the mound, with Payton Johnson pitching in relief. 

The Cheesemakers were also held to just two hits in the loss to Verona, with Updike and Maddie Leck getting the hits. Wild also was tagged for the loss in the pitcher’s circle, with Katie Witt coming on in relief. Both pitchers gave up a homerun to Hilary Blomberg, who finished 3-for-3 with seven RBIs, including four on a grand slam in the third inning.

In the wild win over Waterford, the Cheesemakers scored seven runs in the top of the first, highlighted by Karis Paulson’s monster home run to deep left. Waterford countered with a 5-run inning of its own in bottom half of the frame. Monroe then scored five runs in the top of the second, with Waterford playing another two. The two teams went into the fifth inning tied at 13, with Monroe scoring three times and Waterford twice. 

Sloane Ambrose started the game for Monroe, pitching three innings. Wild tossed the final three innings. Ambrose, Katie Hayes and Sarah Prien each doubled for Monroe. 

In the victory against Tomahawk, Wild threw six solid innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk. Ambrose and Maddie Leck doubled for Monroe, which used a 6-run fifth inning to escape with the win. 

In the four-game stretch, Maurer, Leck and Katie Hayes had four hits apiece.

Argyle goes 2-2 in three-day stretch

MONROE — Grace Ganshert struck out 14 in a two-hit shutout win over Benton-Shullsburg May 13, then the Orioles went 1-2 at the Monroe tournament May 15.

In the opening game of the tournament, Argyle lost to Verona 5-2, with Ganshert striking out 15 batters. None of the five runs against her were earned. She allowed six hits and walked three, and had Argyle’s only hit of the contest — a double.

Argyle then dropped a 15-5 decision to Portage in the next game. The teams left the first inning squared away at 2-2, but Portage went ahead 4-2 in the third and 8-2 through four innings. The Orioles scored three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Warriors countered with a 7-run inning on the bottom half of the frame to end it.

Megan Johnson started on the hill and allowed seven runs on three hits and eight walks in 2-plus innings of work. Ganshert tossed two innings in relief, striking out four and allowing an unearned run to score. Tori Lantz was then tagged for seven runs (five earned) on six walks and a hit in relief in the fifth inning.

Lantz, Ganshert and Johnson each had two hits in the game for the Orioles, with Lantz doubling. 

In a 3-1 win over Tomahawk, Ganshert struck out 12 while giving up four hits, a walk and a hit batter. At the plate, Johnson had two hits, and Ganshert hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.


Brodhead 7, Evansville 1

EVANSVILLE — McKenna Young struck out 14 and scattered three walks and four hits, leading the Cardinals to victory in a conference game May 13.

Evansville took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Cardinals plated two runners in the third and fourth innings, another run in the fifth, and two more in the top of the seventh for insurance.

Sophia Leitzen was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for Brodhead. Madisyn Kail and Abbie Dix also had two hits for Brodhead. Dix, Daisy Nelson and Nataley Bump all doubled, while Young and Leitzen homered.


Juda-Albany 6, Highland 0

HIGHLAND — Avery Briggs tossed a complete-game 1-hitter May 13 for the Panthers, who have continued their impressive start to the season.

Briggs struck out 12 while issuing two walks. At the plate, she walked twice and scored a run.

Alana Durtschi had two hits for Juda-Albany, while Brianna Dahl doubled and Myah Johnson homered.


Belmont 16, Monticello-New Glarus 0

MONTICELLO — The defending WIAA Division 4 state champs scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and didn’t let up in a Six Rivers crossover run May 13.

Harley Disch was tagged with the loss on the mound for the Ponies, allowing 14 runs (seven earned) in two innings of work. She allowed seven hits, walked eight, hit a batter and three 107 pitches. Jaden Zuber came on in relief and threw 27 pitches, giving up four hits and two runs in three innings of work.

Zuber and Katelyn Eyler had MNG’s only hits.


Benton-Shullsburg 13, Darlington 11

DARLINGTON — Hot early bats fizzled late for the Redbirds, which dropped a nonconference game May 14 to Benton-Shullsburg.

Darlington scored all 11 runs in the first four innings, but still trailed 12-11. Benton-Shullsburg added an insurance run in the sixth, and the Redbirds went scoreless over the final three frames.

Cori and Cayla Golackson each had three hits for the Redbirds, while Greta Volkening and Brenna Grossen each finished with two hits. Josie Thomas and Sophie Wiegel doubled for Darlington, with Cayla Golackson hitting a triple. 

Thomas pitched a combined six innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and six walks. Wiegel tossed one inning, allowing four hits, three walks and seven runs (five earned).
