Monroe fumbles away big upset
Redbirds, Knights, Cardinals all fall

MONONA — The Cheesemakers had it all lined up, until they didn’t. Monroe led defending conference champion Monona Grove 29-26 with less than four minutes to play, but a sequence of a touchdown, fumble and then another Silver Eagles touchdown saw visiting Monroe fall 39-29 in Week 3 Sept. 6.

Monona Grove (1-2, 1-0 Badger South) led 7-0 after the first quarter and made it 20-0 with four minutes left in the second, but then the Cheesemakers (1-2, 0-1) mounted a rally.

Trevor Rodebaugh put Monroe on the board with 2:44 left before halftime to make it 20-7. Early in the third quarter, Nick Bansley broke off a 69-yard TD run to bring the Cheesemakers within a touchdown. Five minutes later, Monroe kicker Blake Mueller connected on a 25-yard field goal to make it 20-16.

Fabian Jackson then scored on a 67-yard run to put Monona Grove back up by 10 just 22 seconds after Mueller’s kick. The Cheesemakers weren’t finished, though, as Rodebaugh scored from 56-yards out with 36 seconds left in the third.

With 6:23 left in regulation, Bansley scored again from 5-yards out to put Monroe ahead 29-26. Jackson made his way into the end zone with 3:11 left in the fourth quarter to give the Silver Eagles back the lead. The Cheesemakers then coughed up the ball on the ensuing possession, with Monona Grove taking over with two minutes left at the Monroe 24. Less than a minute later, Silver Eagles quarterback Camron Behnke connected with Kameron Reuter from 16 yards out for the final score of the game.

Rodebaugh led all rushers with 203 yards on 22 carries. Bansley had 127 yards on 13 carries and Tyler Matley had 44 yards on 11 touches. Max Golembiewski was 7 of 16 passing for 98 yards with an interception for the Cheesemakers. JT Seagreaves had six catches for 94 yards.

Jackson led Monona Grove with 171 yards rushing on 14 touches. The Silver Eagles had 412 yards of offense, while the Cheesemakers finished with 472.

Monroe travels to Watertown (3-0, 1-0) in Week 4. The Goslings blanked Madison Edgewood 41-0 in Week 3.

Pardeeville 36, Parkview-Albany 22

ORFORDVILLE — Trailing 8-0 in the second quarter, the Vikings defense came up with a safety and then Korben Brown scored on the next possession to tie it at 8. Pardeeville was able to take a 14-8 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Pardeeville (2-1, 1-0 Trailways Large) went up 22-8 early in the third quarter, but Parkview-Albany stayed in the game thanks to a 51-yard touchdown pass from Javon Ferguson to Calvin Barlass. Pardeeville scored later on a 49-yard run from Derek Lindert to make it 30-14.

Jerickow Schwartzlow scored on a 3-yard run for the Vikings in the fourth quarter to bring the score back to within 8, but Lindert scored the fourth time in the game to seal the victory for Pardeeville.

Lindert finished with 179 yards on 21 carries. Ferguson was 2 of 7 passing for 117 yards and two interceptions. Brown had 117 yards on 16 carries, while Schwartzlow finished with 38 yards on six rushing attempts. Charlie Vogt had 47 yards on 10 attempts for the Vikings. Nevin Crane added a 65-yard catch.

Parkview-Albany (0-3, 0-1) travels to Montello-Princeton-Green Lake (2-1, 1-0) in Week 4.


Columbus 46, New Glarus-Monticello 17

COLUMBUS — The Glarner Knights fell behind 19-0 in the first quarter before a 16-yard touchdown pass from Darris Schuett to Josh Wieser broke the egg in their Week 3 nonconference road loss.

Connor Siegenthaler hit a 27-yard field goal late in the second quarter for New Glarus-Monticello (1-2), which went into halftime trailing 25-10.

Schuett connected with Mason Martinson from 17-yards out to open the third quarter and make it 25-17, but Columbus scored three more touchdowns to close out the game.

Schuett finished 20 of 43 for 194 yards and three interceptions. Siegenthaler had seven catches for 68 yards, while Martinson finished with six catches for 58 yards.

The Glarner Knights host 10th-ranked Lodi (3-0) in a nonconference game in Week 4.


Edgerton 49, Brodhead-Juda 15

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals gave up 28 points in the first quarter and fell behind 42-0 at halftime against the Tide (2-1, 2-1 Rock Valley). 

Brodhead-Juda (1-2, 1-2) scored a touchdown in the third and another in the fourth to break the running clock.

The Cardinals travel to Jefferson (2-1, 2-1) in Week 4.


Lancaster 46, Darlington 21

DARLINGTON — The Arrows scored 14 points in the first quarter, forcing the Redbirds to try and play catchup the rest of the game.

Darlington (2-1, 0-1 SWAL) made it 14-7 early in the second on a 22-yard TD pass from Braden Davis to Carter Lancaster. The Arrows (3-0, 1-0), ranked fourth in Division 5, rebounded with another score with 1:09 left before halftime to go up 20-7.

In the third quarter, Lancaster made it 26-7 after Corey Hahn’s third of five touchdowns in the game. Darlington, ranked sixth in D6, then counted with Davis connecting with Cayden Rankin for a 10-yard TD with 5:57 left in the third.

After the Arrows (3-0, 1-0 SWAL) made it 32-13, Davis found Carter Lancaster again, this time from 47 yards away for the Redbirds’ last score. Hahn then added touchdown runs of 3 and 76 yards to close out the game. Hahn finished with 237 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Davis ended the game 9 of 13 for 173 yards and two interceptions. Wyat Bredeson had 54 rushing yards for Darlington, while Carter Lancaster snagged six passes for 143 yards.

The Redbirds travel to Iowa-Grant (0-3, 0-1) in Week 4.
