Monroe falls to Stoughton, then tops Marathon
Pec edges Monticello by 1, Darlington unbeaten no longer

STOUGHTON — Monroe’s hopes for a Badger South boys basketball conference title were all but dashed with a 61-49 loss to Stoughton Feb. 8.

The Cheesemakers got down big early on and trailed 30-16 at halftime.

JT Seagreaves and Cade Meyer each had 10 points for Monroe, while Hunter Huschitt had nine and Nick Schumacher seven. Stoughton, which was led by Adam Hobson’s 18, held Kade King, Monroe’s leading scorer, to just three points — 11 under his average.

The next night, Monroe (10-9) topped Marathon 53-42 in a nonconference affair at JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. Marathon (14-3) is one of the top-ranked teams in Division 4.


Pecatonica 64, Monticello 63

MONTICELLO — It was a battle to the final buzzer, and in the end Pecatonica kept its hopes at a conference title alive with a tight win over Monticello Dec. 8.

Jaden Hendrickson scored 20 points — 10 in each half — to lead the Vikings, which remain one game back from Barneveld in the standings. Everett Johnson scored 15 points for Pecatonica, while Colton Schraepfer had 10, Carter Ruegsegger nine and Zack Eaton eight. The Vikings hit three 3s in the game, with Ruegsegger burying three himself.

Monticello, which led 36-29 at halftime, was led in scoring by Peter Gustafson’s 21 and Reece Rufer’s 20. Gustafson scored 18 in the first half, while Rufer went to work in the second half with 17. Devan Holtz hit three first half 3s and finished with 14 points.

The Ponies finished 16 of 27 from the charity stripe, including a 9-for-16 mark in the second half.


Cassville 47, Monticello 44

MONTICELLO — In a makeup game of the Six Rivers Crossover Challenge, the Ponies made it two losses in two days, falling to Cassville at home Feb. 9.

Monticello trailed 29-23 at halftime and charged back in the second half, despite attempting just one free throw over the final 18 minutes. Rufer, who scored 13, took all five of Monticello’s free throws in the game, connecting on three. Gustafson added 13 points for the Ponies.


Wisconsin Heights 70, Darlington 63

DARLINGTON — The No. 2-ranked Redbirds suffered their first loss of the season in a nonconference game Feb. 9.

Wisconsin Heights (13-4) led 34-31 at halftime and was able to hold on in the second half, thanks in part to Camden Brown’s 27 points.

Stryker Fitzsimons scored 25 points to lead Darlington (16-1), while Carter Lancaster had 22 and Trae Schilling added 10.

The Redbirds have five games remaining in the final two weeks of the regular season, with four in SWAL play. Darlington currently holds a two-game lead on Mineral Point, with the two schools set to square off Feb. 18 in a game that could be for the league title.


Edgerton 75, Brodhead 45

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals trailed by 19 at halftime and could never get back into the Feb. 8 Rock Valley game against the visiting Tide.

Cade Walker was Brodhead’s only player in double figures, finishing with 13. Dawson Van Whye, Cody Malcook and Connor Green each scored seven for the Cardinals.

Edgerton had four players in double figures, with Kyle Wille (18) and Nick Spang (16) leading the charge.

The next night, Brodhead lost a road game to McFarland, 78-43.


Black Hawk 80, Juda 49

JUDA — Conner Meyer scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Warriors stayed in the hunt for a Six Rivers East title with a win over the Panthers Feb. 8.

Black Hawk senior guard Colby Argall had 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Kyle Lovelace had 16 points and five rebounds. Lovelace hit four 3-pointers. As a team, Black Hawk was 10 of 29 from deep and 10 of 14 from the charity stripe.

The Warriors trail Barneveld by a half of a game in the conference race, with Pecatonica a full game out of first.


Barneveld 62, Albany 41

BARNEVELD — The Comets had three players with 12 points but couldn’t hang with the Eagles in the second half.

Josh Dahl, Corbin Kelley and Jamison Stauffacher all had 12 points for Albany, which trailed 27-20 at halftime. Barneveld outscored the Comets 35-21 in the second half.

Spencer Sullivan had 20 points for Barneveld, while Malcolm Reed scored 16 and Dayne Evans had 14.
