MONROE — The Cheesemakers are off to their best start on the ice in program history, picking up their fourth win in five games after beating DeForest 5-2 in a nonconference contest Dec. 5.

“I’m very proud of the boys tonight,” Monroe co-op coach Barry Einbeck said.

DeForest scored the first goal of the game on its first shot, just 2:11 after the first puck dropped. The Cheesemakers countered right away, with Cade Janecke scoring the first of his five goals less than three minutes later.

Payton Stauffacher launched a shot from just inside the blue line and Janecke redirected it into the net. Hayden Roth was also credited with an assist.

Four minutes later, Janecke scored again as Cooper Dreyfus sent a pass up ice to Roth, who swung a cross pass to Janecke, who put it past DeForest keeper Joseph Brethouwer.

Monroe made it a 4-1 game in the second period, as Janecke pushed through another pair of goals off assists from Stauffacher, Dreyfus and Roth.

In the third, DeForest scored its second goal less than a minute into play, but the Cheesemakers answered five minutes later when Janecke scored his final goal of the night off passes from Jared Dillon and Ty O’Connor.

“I thought it was a good win. I thought every line brought something to the game,” Einbeck said.

Heath Bear had 32 saves in goal for Monroe. Roth and Dreyfus each had three assists.
