Monroe boys, girls top Edgewood in doubleheader
Boys win OT thriller 66-60 while girls dominate 75-58

MADISON — The Monroe boys and girls basketball teams swept Edgewood in a doubleheader Dec. 21.

In the boys’ game, Monroe won 66-60 in overtime. 

The Cheesemakers led 28-25 at halftime, but the game rolled into an extra period after being knotted up at 55 at the end of regulation.

Monroe scored three baskets and finished 5 of 6 from the stripe in the extra period to score the victory.

Nick Schumacher led the Cheesemakers with 18 points, while Mike Lange had 15 and Cade Meyer finished with 10. Freshman JT Seagreaves had nine in the contest, and senior Kade King was held to just two field goals and seven total points.

The win helps Monroe (4-5, 3-2) stay afloat in the Badger South Conference standings and gain a game of separation from the Crusaders (3-5, 2-3). Stoughton (7-3, 5-0) still leads in the standings with Oregon (5-3, 4-1) in second place.

In the girls’ game, Monroe jumped out to a 40-25 lead at halftime and cruised to a 75-58 victory.

Sydney Hilliard had 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Cheesemakers, while Megan Benzschawel finished with 16 points, Emily Benzschawel had 15 and Grace Tostrud added eight points and eight boards.

Monroe (7-3, 4-2) shot 17 of 19 from the free throw line and were 27-for-56 from the field in the game, which included a 4-for-14 effort from deep. Hilliard was a perfect 10-for-10 at the line.

Baluck Deang was the only player in double figures for Edgewood (1-8, 1-5), finishing with 10.
