VERONA — The Monroe boys cross country team took 11th in the 23-team Verona Invitational Sept. 1.
Kyle Legler paced the Cheesemakers in the wet and sloppy conditions, finishing 13th overall with a time of 17 minutes, 23.65, 49 seconds behind champion Caleb Easton of Middleton (16:34.71).
Monroe’s Alex Henry was 41st (18:08.83), seconds ahead of teammate Dylan Fahrney (42nd, 18:10.75). Brennan Shelton finished in 99th place for Monroe (19:20.75) and freshman teammate Heath Huschitt was 115th (19:56.30) in the 156-man field.
New Glarus-Monticello finished 20th as a team, with Adam Nelson taking top honors (57th, 18:25.20). Rudy Wicker was 94th (19:16.35), Conor McCoy 96th (19:17.89), Joe Quaglia 98th (19:20.62) and Evan Guenther 101st (19:22.54).
Madison West was the team champion, placing four runners in the top 20.
On the girls side, Monroe was 21st as a team, one spot behind New Glarus-Monticello.
Jacie Hayes paced the Cheesemakers with a 55th-place finish (22:20.04), and Jazmyn Mader was 122nd (25:13.34). Elise Smith came in 127th (25:43.06), Elery Bazley was 133rd (27:31.45) and Erja Smith was 137th (27:25.79).
Dayna Karls was the top Glarner Knight finisher, taking 90th overall (23:28.05). Molly Molencamp was 105th (24:25.50), Annie Fuller was 107th (24.38.18), Libbie Melvin 132nd (27:27.81) and Alexa Thayer came in 135th (27:36.93).
Monroe and New Glarus-Monticello are both racing today at the Spring Green Invitational.
