MONROE — The Cheesemakers closed its Badger West regular season with a 7-0 loss to Sauk Prairie Sept. 20.

“Overall, I think we’ve done our best but just fell short in some close matches throughout Badger play but also just faced teams with more experience and training than us,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said.

The most competitive match in the singles division was in the fourth flight, where Monroe’s Vaughn Baker lost to Emilia Pape 6-4, 7-5.

“Vaughn Barker continues to impress me the last few matches at 4-singles. She had a slow start to the season, but really came on the last few and is close to breaking through,” Bordner said. “This was a match where she worked herself into two close sets. I think mentally she does such a good job of just resetting herself and continuing to work towards the next point. She’s still working through some footwork and consistency battles but, overall, I’m really happy with how she’s come on strong at No. 4 singles for us.”

Elsewhere in singles, Kylie Miller was blanked in the top flight, 6-0, 6-0; Alicia Brunton lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles; and Bella Brunton was defeated at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1.

“Kylie saw probably the best or second-best opponent she’s seen this season in Quinlyn (Mack). She’s been playing high-level tennis since her freshman year and so for Kylie it was definitely a match to go into and just work on sustaining rallies and picking up as many points as possible,” Bordner said. “Kylie had a good attitude and I think matches like these will help her when she gets to subsectionals hopefully.”

At No. 3 doubles, Allison Wunschel and Bre Giasson narrowly lost 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

“Bre and Allison tend to play close matches,” Bordner said. “They were down 2-5 in the second set and did a fantastic job of battling back and worked it into a tiebreaker. The third set they were down 1-5 and again made it a competitive set. For both of them I think they’ve proven to themselves that they are never out of a match, and at this point just need to clean up some small things as we enter the tail stretch of our season.”

Both Monroe’s No. 1 doubles (Sydney Conway and Lydia Setterstrom) and No. 2 doubles (Melena Brunton and Morgan Johnson) lost 6-1, 6-0.

Monroe returned to the court Sept. 25 in the conference tournament, and then is set for a Sept. 27 dual at Edgerton in a nonconference affair, followed by Fort Atkinson the next day.

“Hopefully we can have better results as a team in those duals,” Bordner said.
