Monroe, BH open season with blowouts
Brodhead tops Monticello and Edgerton top open 2019-20

MONROE — The Cheesemakers opened the regular season with a rousing 71-32 victory over Westosha Central Nov. 22.

Monroe climbed all over their nonconference foe, building a 47-17 halftime advantage.

Grace Tostrud led all scorers with 16 points for Monroe, including a 3 for 7 mark from 3-point land. Megan Benzschawel had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Grace Mathiason finished with a double-double — 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Taylor Jacobson was 3 for 10 from the field for 7 points, but impressed with 13 boards, two steals and two assists. 

Monroe was 7 of 17 (41%) from deep as a team, and went 12 for 21 (57%) from the free throw line. The Cheesemakers were also 26 of 62 (41%) from the field overall. 


Friday, Nov. 22

Black Hawk 76, Wis. Heights 37

MAZOMANIE — The Warriors opened up their title defense season with a rousing nonconference road victory.

Black Hawk quickly outpaced the Vanguards and led 44-24 at halftime.

Natalie Leuzinger and Hannah Butler each finished with 19 points for Black Hawk, while Bailey Butler had 17 and Kaylee Marty had 11.

Both Butlers had a double-double in the game, with Hannah pulling in 10 rebounds with six steals, and Bailey finishing with 11 steals and five assists. Leuzinger had six boards and four steals, while Kristen Knapp chipped in seven boards.

Black Hawk was 27-71 from the field (38%), including 8-22 from deep (36%) and 14-23 from the free throw line (60.8%).

Ashlee Adler led Wisconsin Heights with nine points.


New Glarus 68, Darlington 51

DARLINGTON — Dylan Noll scored 22 points and Jaylynn Benson added 19 as the Glarner Knights opened the season with a strong nonconference win.

New Glarus led 31-23 at halftime and the Knights built the lead even further in the second half. Shealyn Klosterman-Havens had eight points and Brooke Watrud added six for New Glarus.

Brenna McDonald led Darlington in scoring with 12, while Lizzie Schwartz finished with 10 points and Allison Thompson nine.

Brodhead 63, Edgerton 57

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals opened the Rock Valley Conference slate with a tight win over the Crimson Tide. 

Kiarra Moe led all scorers with 18 points and was one of four Cardinals in double figures. Carisa Purdue had 13 points, while Onnikah Oliver and Abbie Dix each finished with 10.

Brodhead was just 14 of 30 from the charity stripe and hit four 3s in the game. Edgerton was led by Shannon Rusch and Cassidy Danks, who each scored 11.


Parkview 59, Albany 58, OT

ALBANY — Alexis Kloften hit the game-winning bank shot field goal from the free throw line with 3 seconds left in overtime to sink the Comets.

Albany led 26-21 at halftime, but the Vikings tied it at 50 at by the end of regulation.

Brianna Dahl led Albany with 22 points, with teammate Payton Wachholz adding 12. The Comets hit seven 3s, but went just 7 for 19 from the line.

Parkview’s Jenna Olin also had 22 points, with teammate Taylor Burrell adding 17.


Juda 51, Benton 46

JUDA — The Panthers picked up their first win of the year in a Six Rivers crossover.

Montana Steinmann scored 15 for Juda, which also received 12 points from Taylor Golackson, 10 from Maddie Smith and eight from Triniti Elmer. 

Juda (1-1) hit four 3s in the game and was 15 of 30 from the free throw line.


Highland 48, Pecatonica 38

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Cardinals built a 35-9 halftime lead to run away with the Six Rivers crossover game.

Tessa Green led the Vikings with 10 points. Lexi Peterson scored nine points and Lily Busser added eight.


Thursday, Nov. 21

Argyle 66, Palmyra-Eagle 28

ARGYLE — The Orioles opened the season with a throttling of Palmyra-Eagle in a nonconference game.

Tori Lantz had 23 points to lead the way, with Grace Ganshert chipping in 19 and Allie Godfrey 8.

Argyle led 42-19 at halftime. The Orioles were 15 of 21 at the line and 24 of their 25 baskets were from inside the arc.


Tuesday, Nov. 19

Brodhead 60, Monticello 15

BRODHEAD — Abbie Dix scored 18 points and was one of nine Cardinals to put points on the board in the season opening win over the Ponies.

Dix scored 14 points in the first half as Brodhead built a 36-8 lead. The Cardinals’ pressure-zone defense stymied Monticello’s offense from finding a rhythm, forcing countless turnovers.

Carisa Purdue and Madisyn Kail each had 10 points for Brodhead. The Cardinals hit just three 3-pointers and went 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Mackie Errthum led Monticello with six points — all coming in the first half. Alexa Siegenthaler hit a 3 for the Ponies, which were 6 of 12 from the line in the contest.


Johnson Creek 54, Juda 44

JOHNSON CREEK — Montana Steinmann had 23 points in the season opener, but the Panthers lost in a nonconference road game. Steinmann hit three 3s and Juda trailed 21-13 at halftime.

Early in the second half the Panthers tied it at 22, but Johnson Creek ran off a 12-0 run to break the game open.

“We just couldn’t crawl back into it,” coach Willie Nelson said. “It was a well-fought game.”

Taylor Golackson had eight points for Juda. Golackson missed last season with an injury.

The Panthers were 10 of 20 from the line and hit four 3s. 


Albany 79, Madison Country Day 8

MADISON — The Comets opened the season with a nonconference thumping ‘W’ over Country Day.

Albany jumped out of the gates and were never in fear of falling behind. The Comets led 52-4 at halftime.

Payton Wachholz led Albany with 23 points, while Kaiya Zurfluh finished with 16 and Brianna Dahl had 12.

In other area scores, Pecatonica lost to Iowa-Grant 67-40 on Nov. 19.
