McGuire SWAL OL POY; Badger West teams released

MONROE — Brodhead had 11 players selected to the SWC All-Conference, led by senior Austin Moe and junior Blake Matthys.  

The pair received Player of the Year honors—Defensive Lineman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively — along with first-team All-Conference offensive and defensive selections. 

Joining Moe and Matthys at first-team are Gunner Boegli on offense and Aidyn Vondra and Marcus McIntyre on defense. Vondra also received first-team All-Conference honors on special teams as a returner. 

Isaac Saunders and CJ Streuly made second-team offense, while Boegli and David Masloske received second-team defense honors. 

Three more Cardinals received honorable mention recognition: Joe Lohmar, Sean Huffman and Gabe Bockhop. 

Brodhead finished second in conference with a 5-2 record behind Prairie du Chien. The two teams will meet in Level 3 playoffs on Friday, Nov. 4.  


Max McGuire SWAL Offensive Lineman of the Year  

MONROE — The Southwestern Wisconsin Athletic League released its all-conference lists for football and volleyball, with Darlington’s Max McGuire receiving football Player of the Year honors. 

McGuire led 18 Redbirds to make football all-conference with his first-team offense and Offensive Lineman of the Year accolades. 

Maddox Goebel, Carver Fitzsimmons and Barrett Vieth also made first team all-conference for offense. First team defenders include Mason Davis, Bryan Lazaro-Mendoza, Reagan Jackson, Carter Murray and Tye Crist. 

Cadyn Burbach, Breylin Goebel, Wyatt Davis and Gage Banfield made the second-team for offense, while Ross Crist was the lone Redbird on the all-conference second-team for defense. Burbach also received second-team specialist honors as a kicker. 

Honorable mention selections include Thomas Buschor and Will Murray at offense, and Maddox Goebel, Roger Volkening III and Brady Long on defense.  

Jared McGranahan was awarded Assistant Coach of the Year. The remaining Player and Coach of the Year awards include Aidan Keyes (Belleville) as Offensive Player of the Year, Brendan Lynch (Mineral Point) as Defensive Player of the Year, Will Schute (Mineral Point) as Defensive Lineman of the Year and Mike Nolden (Belleville) as Coach of the Year. 

Darlington clinched the conference title with a 7-0 record. The Redbirds continue their postseason run with a Level 3 game against Kenosha St. Joseph on Friday, Nov. 4. 

For volleyball, Jaidyn Evenstad and Jaylyn Schwartz received first-team all-conference accolades to lead Darlington. Juniors Aubrey McCarthy and Zoie Zuberbuhler nabbed honorable mention awards.  

Conference champs Mineral Point (11-1) had four first-team selections in seniors Kennedy Kabat, Kennedy Wenger, Regan Suddeth and Mackenzie Aurit. Wenger was Player of the Year along with Kari Kabat as Coach of the Year. 

The Redbirds finished tied for third in the SWAL with Southwestern, who also had an 8-4 conference record.


Badger West All-Conference released

MONROE — The Badger West Conference released its all-conference selections for boys soccer and volleyball on Tuesday, Nov. 1. 

For Monroe soccer, Alessandro Chagoya received honorable mention accolades. The Cheesemakers ended their season with an 0-8 conference record.  

Conference champion Oregon (8-0) had four first-team All-Conference selections in seniors Anthony Elert, Mason Diercks, Noah Malcook and Casey Schoenecker. Johan Lopez of Baraboo (6-2) was a unanimous first-team selection. 

For Monroe volleyball, Sophie Golembiewski received honorable mention accolades. The Cheesemakers ended their season with an 0-7 conference record. 

Conference champion Sauk Prairie (7-0) had four first-team All-Conference selections in seniors Annika Braund, Maggie Hartwig, Jenna Pistono and Alexis Klemm. As unanimous selections, Braund and Addie Schmotzer of Edgewood were co-players of the year.
