PLATTEVILLE — The Monroe-New Glarus swim team opened the season with a dual victory at Platteville Aug. 22. The Cheesemakers cruised to a 124-43 win.
“Our team did an excellent job cheering each other on and supporting one another,” said first-year coach Kendra Kalvin.
Monroe-New Glarus won all but two of the varsity races, and the junior varsity blanked Platteville. The Cheesemakers also finished 1-2-3 in six events.
“We saw some big-time drops from lots of swimmers, specifically sophomore Taylor Rufer in her 200-free and 100-back as well as sophomore Karley Michels in her 100-breast,” Kalvin said.
Michels won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.77. Rufer finished fourth in the 100-back stroke (1:13.63), behind teammates Alyssa Roelli (2nd, 1:05.33) and Kaitlyn Elgin (3rd), 1:10.56). Mekenzie Hammer won the 200-free (2:05.86), with Anna Newcomer second (2:12.82) and Rufer third (2:30.18).
