MONROE — The Cheesemakers played their first game of the season at Honey Creek Park and lost to Milton 7-2 April 25.

The Red Hawks scored five goals in the first half to take a commanding lead into halftime on a cold and rainy afternoon.

In the second half, the Cheesemakers were able to put two scores on the board to offset Milton’s other two goals. Zoee Pond scored both of Monroe’s second half goals. She took three shots in the game. Lydia Butler also had a shot on net for the Cheesemakers.

Anna Latimer played the first half in goal, finishing with eight saves. Lily Frehner played the second half and had four saves.

Sugar River 2, Columbus 0

COLUMBUS — Regyn Jelle put the eighth-ranked Raiders up 1-0 at the 40-minute mark in the second half, and teammate Kirsten Krantz followed that up with a booming free kick goal three minutes later to give Sugar River a Capitol Conference win April 25.

Krantz had a direct free kick from about 40 yards out with the wind at her back. The perfect touch placed the ball past the outstretched arms of Columbus goalie Aurora Toutant and just under the crossbar.

Julia McNamar assisted Jelle’s goal, which came on a counterattack. Toutant was on in relief of starter Samantha Menomin, who had left the game earlier with an injury, but returned in the second half. Menomin finished with five saves for the Cardinals, while Toutant had one.

Rachael Heittola and Morgan Thompson each had a save in net for Sugar River, ranked eighth in Division 3 in the April 22 Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll.

The Raiders, state semifinalists a season ago, lost senior midfielder Sydney Gentilli with a knee injury. Sophomore forward Jaylynn Benson is also sidelined indefinitely with an injury.
