Cheesemakers Win Pitcher’s Duel 2-1 Over Evansville
On a day in which runs were hard to come by, junior Marcus Ott of the Monroe Cheesemakers pitched a gem to lead Monroe to a 2-1 win over Evansville in nonconference baseball on April 10 at Evansville. Ott tossed seven innings of 1-hit baseball to help the Cheese improve to 2-0 on the season. Ott struck out 10, walked four and hit a batter while leaving six runners stranded. Evansville starting pitcher Cordell Harris was almost as stingy as he went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, six hits and struck out two without issuing a walk.
Monroe scored single runs in the fourth and the fifth. Ott helped himself at the plate by going 2x3 with an RBI. Senior shortstop Ashton Hale was 1x3 and scored one run for Monroe. Junior catcher Logan Meier got a base hit and scored the Cheesemakers’ other run.
Monroe (2-0) hosted Belleville on April 14 and Brodhead-Juda on April 15.
New Glarus Walks Off Marshall 3-2 in 8 Innings
Under first year head coach Eric Spanton, the New Glarus Glarner Knights got off to a 4-1 start after winning 3-2 in eight innings over the Marshall Cardinals on April 10 at New Glarus. The Knights got a solid performance on the mound from sophomore Nolan Julseth, who went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. Julseth struck four and walked three. Freshman Brock Roth got the win in relief by setting the Cardinals down in order in the eighth inning. Julseth scored all three runs for the Knights while junior Landon Stelter got on base three times with two hits, a walk, and an RBI.
Poynette Takes 11-4 Win Over NG
The Poynette Pumas used the third, fourth and fifth innings to score 10 runs and defeat the New Glarus Glarner Knights 11-4 in a game between Capitol Conference North and South Division teams. The Glarner Knights actually led 3-1 after one inning, but the Pumas came alive with two runs in the third, five runs in the fourth, and three runs in the fifth to pull away. Designated hitter Ethan Colstad was 2x3 with two RBIs for the Knights. First baseman Braden Rear also drove in two runs for the Knights. New Glarus (1-1 in the Capitol South, 4-2 overall) hosted Lake Mills on April 15.
Belleville Wildcats Drop Two Games
The Belleville Wildcats suffered two losses in high school baseball last week. Belleville lost 3-1 to Cambridge in Capitol South Conference action on April 10. Senior Logan Derke drove in senior Brennan Keyes with the only run of the game for the Wildcats. Marcus Hebgen pitched three innings for Belleville, giving up three runs on six hits. Austin McKinley pitched four innings in relief and did not allow a run on four hits.
Belleville traveled to Whitewater for a nonconference game on April 11 and lost, 6-5. The Whippets scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game. McKinley had a base hit and two RBIs plus two runs scored for the Wildcats. Niles Monroe collected two hits, and RBI, and scored two runs for Belleville. Derke started on the mound for Belleville. He gave up four runs, one earned, on four hits in three innings with a strikeout and five walks. With the two losses, the Wildcats fell to 1-1 in the Capitol South, 2-3 overall. Belleville played at Monroe on April 14, and at home against Columbus on April 15.
Pec Takes 4-0 Win Over Highland
The Pecatonica Vikings made the most out of their five hits in a 4-0 win over the Highland Cardinals in Six Rivers Conference baseball on April 10 at Blanchardville. After a scoreless first inning, the Vikings got all the runs they needed in the second inning. After junior shortstop Austin McNett flied out to start the inning, third baseman Cohlman Schlimgen walked. Right fielder Levi Krebs was retired on a popup, then sophomore DH Luke Leonard was hit by a pitch. After sophomore catcher Marty Anderson reached base on a fielder’s choice, sophomore centerfielder Griffin Noll drove in both Schlimgen and Leonard with a 2-run double while Anderson was thrown out at the plate trying to score. The Vikings added runs in the third and in the fifth. Meanwhile, junior pitcher Austin Enloe blanked the Cardinals on just one hit. The Vikings improved to 3-0 overall with the win, and 2-0 in the Six Rivers Conference. Pecatonica hosted River Ridge in another Six Rivers conference game on April 11 before playing at Cambria-Friesland in nonconference action on April 14.
River Ridge Pulls Away for a 10-4 Win Over Pec
The River Ridge Timberwolves scored eight runs over the final three innings to take a 10-4 win over the Pecatonica Vikings in a Six Rivers Conference game on April 11 at Blanchardville. Junior third baseman Cohlman Schlimgen went 2x3 and had three RBIs for the Vikings. Senior pitcher Drew Hendrickson pitched four innings and struck out four and walked two for Pecatonica. The Vikings lost for the first time this season. They are now 2-1 in the Six Rivers Conference, and 3-1 overall. The Vikings played a non-conference game at Cambria-Friesland on April 14 and a Six Rivers Conference game on April 15 at home against Monticello-Albany.
Potosi-Cassville Takes Six Inning Win Over Monticello-Albany
The Potosi-Cassville Chieftains put up five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-2 win over the Monticello-Albany Space Stallions in Six Rivers Conference baseball on April 11. Center fielder Drew Freitag, catcher Nate Stokstad, second baseman Brodyn Bakken, and right fielder Kaden Zurfluh were the only players to get base hits for Monticello-Albany. With the loss, the Space Stallions dropped to 0-3 in the conference and 0-5 overall. Monticello-Albany hosted Argyle-Black Hawk on April 14 and traveled to Pecatonica on April 15. Both of those games were in Six Rivers Conference play.
Brodhead-Juda Picks Up Two Wins Against RVC-Valley Teams
The Brodhead-Juda Cardinals picked up a pair of wins over Rock Valley Conference, Valley Division teams last week. On April 10, the Cardinals shut out the Delavan-Darien Comets, 3-0 as starting pitcher Sam Searls, a junior, fired a two-hitter and struck out seven batters in going the distance. Senior catcher Gabe Bockhop scored two of the three runs for Brodhead-Juda.
On April 11, the Cardinals won a slugfest over the East Troy Trojans, 15-14. The Cardinals scored eight runs in the first inning, but would need to score a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to come away with the win. Bockhop went 3x4 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs to lead the Cardinals. Searls had a double and three RBIs in four trips to the plate for Brodhead-Juda. With the two wins, Brodhead-Juda is 4-0. They will play at Monroe in a non-conference game on April 15.
Warren Blanks Argyle-Black Hawk 11-0
The Warren Warriors defeated the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles on April 12 11-0. Warren scored two runs in the first, one in the third, six in the fourth and two more in the sixth to end the game by mercy rule. Warren had 11 hits, while Argyle-Black Hawk finished with just two hits — Jackson Berget singled and Spencer Hay-Skattum doubled. Deacon Kuebli and Mitchell Johnsen each drew a walk for ABH. Johnsen took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs, eight earned on nine hits and one walk with a strikeout and two hit batters in four innings. Berget pitched two innings and allowed two hits, two earned runs, hit two batters, walked one and struck out three.
