MHS nets W; Cards beat Wis.Heights

WATERTOWN — Monroe improved to 3-0 on the season with a 73-67 win over the Goslings Jan. 9.

Carson Leuzinger led the Cheesemakers with 18 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 mark from the free throw line. Monroe had four players in double figures in scoring, with Cade Meyer and JT Seagreaves each finishing with 17 points, and Tyler Matley collecting 10. Max Golembiewski chipped in with 8 points, and Heath Huschitt hit a key 3-pointer for the Cheesemakers.

Watertown had 13 3s in the contest, with Patrick Lampe knocking down six shots from beyond the arc, and Oliver Meyers adding five more. Meyers finished with a game-high 24 points, and Lampe had 20. No other Gosling had more than five points.

Monroe hit eight 3s in the contest, with Seagreaves hitting four himself. The biggest difference in the game was at the free throw line, which is where the Cheesemakers won the game. Monroe finished 21 of 29 from the stripe, while Watertown was just 4-for-9.

Up next for the Cheesemakers was a scheduled Jan. 12 game at Milton. Waunakee comes to town Jan. 14, and Monroe hosts Janesville Parker two days later.


Cassville 55, Argyle 41

CASSVILLE — The Orioles let a nonconference game against Cassville slip away Jan. 9.

The two teams went into halftime with Argyle trailing by just a point at 21-20, however, the Comets outscored the Orioles 34-21 in the second half.

Clay Ritschard led Argyle 19th 12 points, while Mason Svendsen had 10 and Connor Carius 7. Cameron Schmitz and Jonah Vogt each had 17 for Cassville.

The day before, Argyle lost to Black Hawk 59-43.


Albany 46, Faith Christian 41

ALBANY — The Comets scored a tight nonconference win Jan. 8 thanks to some stingy defense and overall free throw numbers.

Faith Christian hit just 12 shots from the field in all — six of those were from deep, however. Meanwhile, Albany, which had just 13 field goals, finished 16 of 25 from the free throw line. The Comets led 23-15 halftime. 

Clay Hulbert led Albany with 20 points, while Rob Schroeder had 12.


Brodhead 69, Wisconsin Heights 67

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals collected a nonconference win Jan. 8 over the Vanguards, thanks in part to four players notching double digits in the points column.

Owen Leifker led Brodhead with 17 points, while Connor Green had 15. Cade Walker added 13 and Devon Anderson finished with 11. 

Wisconsin Height, which trailed 33-26 at halftime, were led by De’Shawn Barsness, who had 22 points.

In other area boys basketball action, Barneveld defeated Pecatonica 53-40 Jan. 8, and Black Hawk shredded Belmont 63-35 Jan. 9.
