Freshman Heath Huschitt paced Monroe with a 39th overall place and a time of 20 minutes, 13.1 seconds

ALBANY — Brodhead-Juda sophomore Madelynn McIntyre won the outright title girls 5,000-meter run at the annual Baertschi Invitational Oct. 6.

McIntyre’s time of 22 minutes, 4.7 seconds was nearly 22 seconds ahead of second-pace Anna Ollendick of Mount Horeb. Monroe’s Jacie Hayes finished 10th (22:58.0).

“Probably the muddiest race I’ve seen,” said Monroe coach Scott Mosher. “The Baertschi is a fun race to compete hard but not one to run fast times. Jacie has been improving each race and has put herself in contention for all-conference honors.”

Brodhead-Juda finished sixth as a team in the girl’s large school standings. Mount Horeb narrowly edged Platteville by three points, Evansville by five points and Milton by six.

Nicole Kamholz finished 34th overall for the Cardinals (24:18.5), while teammates Emma Lokkos (59th, 25:18.6), Kyleigh Raupp (76th, 26:12.4) and Carisa Purdue (82nd, 26:34.3) also scored for Brodhead-Juda.

Monroe was eighth in the large school division. Jazmyn Mader (71st, 22:58.0), Elise Smith (84th, 26.40.3), Ellery Bazley (86th, 26:43.5) and Maddie Bartelt (98th, 27:07.2) also scored for the Cheesemakers.

In the small-school division on the girl’s side, Marshall (47) edged out Albany (79) for first place. The Comets got scoring runs from Madison Peters (18th, 23:20.6), Payton Wacholz (32rd, 24:09.4), Kaiya Zurfluh (36th, 24:32.4), Megan Anderson (46th, 24:52.4) and Emileigh Dallman (61st, 25:24.7).

New Glarus-Monticello was ninth as a team, with scoring runs from Dayna Karls (69th, 26:01.3), Annie Fuller (78th, 26:21.2), Molly Molencamp (97th, 27:06.5), Dylan Noll (118th, 29:13.8) and Libbie Melvin (126th, 30:38.8).

On the boy’s side, Monroe finished sixth in the large school race after lead-runner Kyle Legler bowed out with an ankle injury.

“He tweaked it on Friday during practice and it was really bothering him with all the mud and wet conditions. In retrospect we should have held him out,” Mosher said. “But it didn’t hurt at the start and it always seems like injuries happen when you try to play it safe.”

Freshman Heath Huschitt (39th, 20:13.1) led the way for the Cheesemakers, followed by Trevor Boll (52nd, 20:27.9), Chance Nelson (58th, 20:36.6), Brennan Shelton (60th, 20:37.6) and Jake Brower (70th, 20:54.5).

“We had a few guys sit out to prepare for conference, which gave other runners a chance to compete on varsity. Heath Huschitt, Trevor Boll, Chance Nielsen and Kendall Wild all had nice days,” Mosher said. “Across the board, times for all teams averaged over two minutes slower than last week and these guys were well under that.”

Elsewhere in the large-school division, Brodhead-Juda was ninth as a team. Carter Urness (37th, 20:08.6) led the pack of Cardinals, followed by Jacob Staffon (43rd, 20:17.8), Brady Bruns (82nd, 21:16.5), Trenton Condon (94th, 21:36.4) and Royce Brauer (104th, 21:50.5).

In the small-school standings New Glarus-Monticello finished second behind Stateline Home School. Joe Quaglia (16th, 19:27.5) led the way for the Glarner Knights, which also received scoring runs from Conor McCoy (20th, 19:36.6), Adam Nelson (27th, 19:48.2), Evan Guenther (42nd, 20:14.8) and Rudy Wicker (47th, 20:21.4).

Albany boys finished ninth in the small-school standings with Josh Dahl (14th, 19:21.4) leading the way. Owen Baertschi (109th, 21:53.5), Luke Johnson (118th, 22:15.8), Andy Gertsch (122nd, 22:19.2) and Tyler Anderson (154th, 25:16.3) also had scoring runs for the Comets.
