BRODHEAD — Following the 2022-23 season, Brodhead-Juda head football coach Jim Matthys announced his retirement. Jim coached the Cardinals for 27 years, compiled a 119-58 record and was named the 2021 SWC Coach of the Year.
Jim took a three-year break from coaching but returned in 2016 and said the decision was one he didn’t regret.
“It was awesome, and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything,” Jim said of the opportunity. “Brodhead-Juda Football has been a family affair for us, as Blake was a ball boy for me, then a player; my daughter Bailey was our water girl for several years until she graduated; and my wife Kim has filmed almost every game for the past 10-plus years.”
Although playing the role of a parent and coach was difficult at times, neither Jim or Blake would trade the experience.
“Blake is a great kid and I would not trade that time I got to spend with him for anything,” Jim said.
Blake, who graduates this spring, echoed his father’s sentiments, saying having his father on the sideline was a “great experience” that made “football more of a connection.”
Although Jim will retain his principal duties, he looks forward to hunting, fishing and taking a vacation in his free time.
