M-NG topples MG to close out dual season
Cheesemakers look to polish technique, get healthy with just 2 weeks left before sectionals

MONONA — The Cheesemakers won their final dual meet of the season with a healthy 101-69 win over Monona Grove Oct. 16.

“Their focus now is to get healthy … and get stronger,” Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. “They have been battling the flu.”

The Cheesemakers won seven of the 11 events, beginning with the 200-yard medley relay. Morgan Erstad, Mekenzie Hammer, Karley Michels and Nina Schiro teamed up to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1 minutes, 59.07 seconds — three seconds ahead of their Silver Eagles counterparts.

Hammer won the 200 individual medley (2:16.31) by nearly 18 seconds and was first in the 100 backstroke (1:00.33), finishing just ahead of Erstad (1:03.54), who was second. Hammer, Alyssa Roelli and Nina and Francesca Schiro won the 400 freestyle (3:52.29) by eight seconds.

Roelli, Erstad, Francesca Schiro and Kendra Wenger teamed up to win the 200 freestyle (1:47.82), finishing a half of a second ahead of Monona Grove’s top group (1:48.36). 

Francesca Schiro was first in the 100 freestyle (58.26), just ahead of MG’s Cassandra Keller (58.71). Nina Schiro dominated the 500 freestyle (5:46.12), with teammate Anna Newcomer coming in second (6:09.65). Francesca Schiro finished second in the 50 freestyle (27.02) with Roelli third (27.32) in a race won by MG’s Brianna Back (26.69). Back also won the 200 freestyle (2:02.97) with Erstad coming in second (2:06.82) and Newcomer finishing third (2:13.70). 

In the 100 butterfly, MG’s Mary O’Malley (1:04.19) outpaced Roelli (1:04.99) for the win. Michels finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.47) to O’Malley (1:15.33).

Up next for Monroe-New Glarus is today’s UW-Platteville Invitational and then the Badger Conference meet in Stoughton Oct. 27. Sectionals will take play Nov. 3.
