MONROE — The Monroe-New Glarus swim team dominated a Watertown team short on numbers Tuesday at the Green County YMCA, 121.5-48.5.
“The girls swam with determination even though most of them did not swim in their strongest events,” Monroe coach Linda Moser said. “Tonight showed that they can compete in strokes that are not necessarily their strongest stroke. It was great to see the versatility this team has and I think the girls recognized it too. We will build on what we learned from tonight and keep getting stronger as a team.”
The Cheesemakers won 9 of 11 events, including all three relays. Monroe-New Glarus won the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2 minutes, 17.8 seconds thanks to swims by Mekenzie Hammer, Peyton Yaun, Karley Michels and Cammi Ganshert.
The Cheesemakers squad of Alyssa Roelli, Ganshert, Yaun and Hammer won the 200 freestyle relay (2:02.8), and Roelli, Ganshert, Morgan Erstad and Michels won the 400 relay (4:29.45) to end the night.
Hammer would add a win in the 200 individual medley (2:32.96), 14 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, and another title in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.43) ahead of Yaun and Elsa Schaefer. Ganshert was champion in the 50 freestyle (30.06).
Roelli won the 200 freestyle (2:23.91), which saw teammates Kendra Wenger (2:33.18) and Anna Newcomer (2:33.82) take second and third.
Erstad won the 400 freestyle (4:53.71), with Monroe-New Glarus again sweeping the top three spots. Kaitlyn Elgin (5:19.42) was second and Newcomer (5:26.16) was third.
Erstad was also champion of the 100 backstroke (1:10.02) which saw a tie for second place between Monroe-New Glarus freshman Taylor Rufer and Watertown’s Bailey Georgia (1:25.00)
The Cheesemakers’ JV team won 78-35.
