OREGON — Monroe’s boys basketball team went on the road and picked up a come-from-behind 59-57 overtime win over Oregon Feb. 11 thanks in large part to sophomore guard Carson Leuzinger.
Playing a second game without leading scorer Cade Meyer, the Cheesemakers went into halftime down by just three. Leuzinger was clutch down the stretch for Monroe, hitting key free throws and scoring the final seven points of regulation to send the game into an extra period.
Monroe trailed by seven with 42.8 seconds left, but Leuzinger came through with a pair of free throws to make it 51-46. Panthers guard Isaac Gard then missed the front end of a 1-and-1 bonus, and Leuzinger followed with a jumper in the lane with 25.4 seconds left to make it a 3-point game. After another foul with under 20 seconds to play, Gard missed the front end of another bonus free throw attempt, and Leuzinger ended up back at the charity stripe with 10.8 seconds left.
Smoothly, Leuzinger hit both attempts to bring the score to 51-50. A quick foul sent Ben Statz to the line for a double bonus for Oregon. Statz hit the first attempt, but clanked off the front iron on the second. Monroe’s Tyler Matley grabbed the rebound and gave the ball to Leuzinger, who drove the length of the court and hit a layup to tie it at 52 a second before time expired.
In overtime, both teams played scoreless for the first 3 1/2 minutes, then senior forward Aaron Ziolkowski tipped in a missed shot to put the Cheesemakers up by two. JT Seagreaves hit a pair of clutch free throws, and Leuzinger knocked down three more in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.
Leuzinger finished with a game-high 20 points, while Ziolkowski and Tyler Matley each scored 12. Erik Victorson led Oregon (6-10, 2-8 Badger South) with 22.
The win keeps Monroe (13-4, 8-2) within striking distance of Stoughton (16-2, 9-1) at the top of the Badger South standings.
