SOUTH WAYNE — Junior Natalie Leuzinger shot her way into Black Hawk’s 1,000-point club while helping the top-ranked Lady Warriors dismantle Barneveld, 75-11, Six Rivers East girls’ basketball action Dec. 20.
Leuzinger became the fifth player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark of her career just six minutes into the game when she buried a 3-pointer from the corner for her 10th point of the night. She netted 16 of her game-high 23 points in the first half to shoot the Warriors (8-0 overall, 5-0 Six Rivers East) out to a 51-6 halftime lead.
“It’s just amazing. Coming into high school, I had a goal to reach 1,000 points after seeing other players do it. To do it as a junior and to think I’m just the fifth player to accomplish it in Black Hawk history is just crazy. I was not expecting that at all,” said Leuzinger.
Black Hawk head coach Michael Flanagan noted Leuzinger is the second Lady Warrior to reach the milestone as a junior — joining current UW-Green Bay standout Jen Wellnitz, who also owns the all-time school record with 1,580 career points. He added that to do it only eight games into her junior season says a lot about the work she has put in to become the player she has become.
“The really neat thing is that she has earned every one of those points without question. She practices and prepares so hard. The amount of time she puts into basketball when nobody’s watching is something few people understand,” Flanagan said. “When we say she works hard, I think people get an image in their heads, and it’s probably about half of what she’s exactly done to get where she is. She’s got a lot of basketball left to play. We’re really proud of her.”
Fellow junior Hannah Butler buried a pair of early 3s and added a breakaway layup off one of the many turnovers the hosts forced in the first half to lift the Lady Warriors out to an 8-0 advantage just over two minutes into the game.
Leuzinger poured in seven of the next 13 points to put the Warriors up 21-0 before Barneveld even attempted their first shot, and she extended the lead to 29-0 with her milestone-topping 3-pointer and a layup off yet another turnover.
The Golden Eagles (2-7, 2-2) finally got one scoreboard on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Leah Marx with 9:14 remaining in the half. Marx and junior guard Morgan Schult would each add a pair of free throws in the half to account for all their team’s scoring as the Warriors held Barneveld without a field goal the entire first half and nearly seven minutes into the second half.
Juniors Maddy Huschitt (two) and Kristin Knapp (one) knocked down 3-pointers for the Warriors towards the end of the first half and five of their teammates added two-point field goals to send Black Hawk into the intermission sporting a 51-6 lead.
“Barneveld is having a down year, but they’re not going to be held to 11 points in many games. They’re not that down. They have kids who can play good basketball. But we were relentless tonight. It’s about the process and doing things the right way. I feel that these kids — the way they talk to one another, the way they work together and the way they have bought into our system — have started to get it,” Flanagan said.
Hannah Butler, Leuzinger and sophomore Kaylee Marty joined forces to put the Warriors up 64-8 early in the second half.
Schult tallied Barneveld’s first and only basket with 11:16 to play. The Eagles would be held to just one more free throw the rest of the night as Black Hawk coasted to their 27th straight conference victory dating back to a 70-29 loss to Barneveld at the end of the 2015-16 season.
Leuzinger capped her special night with four free throws to finish with 23 points, and she added five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win.
Hannah Butler tallied 22 points — 16 in the first half — along with seven steals, seven rebounds and six assists, while sophomore Bailey Butler chipped in with eight points, five steals and four assists for the Warriors.
Huschitt sank three of the Warriors’ seven 3-pointers to contribute nine points, and Marty tacked on seven points and four rebounds for the hosts.
“They care about the small things when they’re on the court, and that’s why we have a chance to be a very decent team. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting close. I feel like the last few games we’ve been true to our core principles. If we continue to do that, this team has a chance to be fairly dangerous,” Flanagan said.
Marx and Schult each scored four points on the night to lead the Eagles.
Black Hawk will be in action over the holiday, traveling to Dodgeville to face the Dodgers in a nonconference tilt Dec. 27.
