MONROE — The Monroe girls soccer team dropped a pair of nonconference games earlier this week, including a heartbreaker April 19 against Dodgeville-Mineral Point.

At TR Holyoke Field on Monday, April 18, the Cheesemakers (1-4) fell to Platteville-Lancaster 4-0, and the next evening, the visiting Dodgers scored with just six seconds left on the clock to win 2-1.

Both teams played cat and mouse in the first half, and in the second half it was Monroe striking first, as a booming goal from Atziri Ocampo put the Cheesemakers ahead 1-0 in the 57th minute. However, the Dodgers (2-1-2) struck right back, tying it a minute later on a goal from Hope Wilson.

In the final minute, Monroe put a rush on the goal, but a quick counterattack Wilson caught the Cheesemaker defense out of position. Marlies Brandli outsprinted the Dodger striker, but slipped on an attempt from the top of the box to kick the ball out of bounds to waste time. That left Wilson with a free one-on-one shot at Monroe keeper Kaelyn Welch, who went on to block the shot with under 12 seconds left.

DMP recovered the ball on the edge of the box, and sent a pass back inside past a slew of diving Cheesemakers, including Welch. The cross was successful, and Wilson had a second try at the open net, burying it home at 70:54. Monroe’s final attempt to score from midfield on the restart was intercepted.

Against Platteville-Lancaster (4-1) the day before, the Hillmen went ahead in the 18th minute on a score by Brook Von Glahn. Von Glahn would add a second goal in the 23rd minute, and the game would go into halftime at 2-0. In the second half, Platteville-Lancaster added two more goals to push the game out of reach.

Monroe struggled finding a rhythm to push the Hillmen on offense, with wind chill temperatures hovering in the mid-20s, with winds in excess of 25 miles per hour, and snow falling intermittently. The Cheesemakers had several players bow out of the game with minor injuries, from ankle sprains to leg and foot cramps.

Up next for the Cheesemakers was a game at Edgewood (4-1) April 21, with the next home game slated for April 26 against Reedsburg (2-1-1).
