Knights score two wins; Brodhead splits

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights picked up a pair of wins late last week, beating Waterloo at home 63-40 on Jan. 14, then closing out Poynette on the road two days later, 69-59.

In the win over Waterloo, New Glarus led 26-7 at halftime to set the pace. Dain Walter led the Knights with 17 points in the post, while Darris Schuett had 10, Carter Siegenthaler 9 and Breckin Faber and Jack Parman each adding 8 points.

New Glarus is now 10-4 on the season and tied with Marshall atop the Capitol South at 3-1. The Knights were scheduled to face Wisconsin Heights Jan. 19, then Marshall Jan. 23 before a nonconference home game against Darlington Jan. 25.


McFarland 76, Brodhead 70

BRODHEAD — The Spartans took a 10-point lead at halftime, and the Cardinals were unable to climb their way out Jan. 14.

Owen Leifker had 21 points to lead Brodhead, including three 3-pointers. Cade Walker had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and knocked down three 3s as well. Connor Green had two 3s and 14 points for Brodhead.

McFarland had four players in double figures, led by Blake Kes, who had 27.


Brodhead 84, Black Hawk 58

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals dominated in the second half to topple the Warriors Jan. 16.

Leifker hit six 3s and finished with a game-high 32 points. Green had 20 points, and Walker hit four 3s on his way to 14 points. Brodhead was 14 of 37 from deep (37.8%)

Black Hawk hit just four 3s and finished 10 of 22 from the free throw line. Thatcher Schliem and Clayton Stietz each had 15 to lead the Warriors, while Dempsey Schliem added 10 points.


Darlington 71, Mineral Point 59

MINERAL POINT — The Redbirds led by just one at halftime but pulled away in the second half to score a win over SWAL rival Mineral Point Jan. 14.

Carter Lancaster had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Darlington. Teammate Curtis Stone had 19 to lead the Redbirds in scoring, and Cayden Rankin also reach double-figures with 14 points.


Oshkosh Lourdes 63, Darlington 62

LA CROSSE — The Redbirds lost a nonconference nail-biter at the Midwest Players Classic at the La Crosse Center Jan. 16.

Darlington trailed 33-28 at halftime and the two teams saw the contest come down to the wire. 

Lourdes led 61-52 with 4:17 left, but the Redbirds went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes. Stone made a pair of free throws with 15.3 seconds remaining to put Darlington ahead by a point, but then Preston Ruedinger scored the game-winning layup for Lourdes with 3.1 seconds left. Ruedinger led his team with 18 points.


Barneveld 62, Albany 43

ALBANY — Rob Schroeder led the Comets with 17 points as the Comets fell to 2-3 in the Six Rivers East in a Jan. 16 loss to the Eagles. Barneveld’s Chase Ignatius led all scorers with 19 points. 

The Eagles led 32-20 at halftime, and 40-29 with just over 11 minutes in the game.

In other area boys basketball action, Juda defeated Pecatonica Jan. 14 for its first win of the season, but then the Panthers lost to Williams Bay in a nonconference game Jan. 16, 71-52.
