New Glarus volleyball defeated Marshall in five sets Oct. 8, 2019.

MARSHALL — The Glarner Knights picked up a second Capitol South victory Oct. 8, coming back from down two sets to win 3-2.

“(We) came into the evening with the will to find a win,” New Glarus coach Kayla Zimmerman said.

Marshall (4-4 Capitol South) defeated New Glarus (2-6) in the Rio Tournament three days before the conference clash and went up on the Knights 2-0 after taking the first two sets 25-17, 25-16.

“(We) jumped out to a quick lead, only to plateau and let the score slip away,” Zimmerman said of the first set. “The second set was much the same.”

New Glarus bounced back in the third set, winning 25-22, and kept the momentum going in the fourth set, 25-20.

“Game three was all Knights. The girls hit their groove defensively, as well as at the net,” Zimmerman said.

In the game-deciding fifth set, the Knights serving paralyzed the Cardinals and forced Marshall to call both timeouts. The momentum didn’t slow, and New Glarus won the tie-breaking frame 15-5.

Alexah Mellenberger had 16 kills for New Glarus, while Lily Himmelmann had 11 kills and Emma Marty added seven. Grace Nommensen finished with 38 assists, five blocks and four kills; Brooke Watrud finished with 10 digs; defensive specialist Jada Malaise notched six digs; and Lola Gillaspie chipped in with five kills.

Grace Ganshert had nine kills and 10 digs to lead Argyle (8-2), while Claudia Miller had three aces, Megan Johnson 25 assists and Maggie Godfrey a key block.

“Juda missed too many serves (four) in the first set,” Anderson said. “Game 2 was a seesaw battle, and so was Game 3. In the end, some critical serves were missed, and our serve receive and passing (struggled). Argyle had some timely aces.”
