Helfvogt scores 1,000th career point in narrow Oriole victory

ARGYLE — With a floater in the second half, Will Helfvogt eclipsed 1,000 career points. The senior led the team with 16 points in a 53-50 victory over Southwestern on Tuesday, Feb. 6. 

Helfvogt accounted for the team’s only 3-pointer and went 5-for-6 from the line. Mason McNett also tallied 16 points, making what proved to be the game-winning free throws. As a team, the Orioles shot 10 of 17 from the line.

Argyle (13-6, 7-1 Six Rivers East) and Barneveld (13-6, 7-1) were tied atop the Six Rivers East conference standings at time of press. The two faced off on Thursday, Feb. 8 in a crucial game. A full-game recap will be published in the Wednesday, Feb. 14 edition of the Monroe Times.

JOHNSON CREEK 45

MONTICELLO — Ryer Indergand went to the line for bonus with 25 seconds left and made what proved to be the game-winning free throws in a nonconference game on Monday, Feb. 5. The Ponies (8-10, 5-4 Six Rivers East) overcame a 26-18 halftime deficit to Johnson Creek (9-10, 4-5 Trailways South).

Indergand’s free throws were indicative of the entire game, as Monticello got to the line 27 times and made 15 of those shots. Conversely, Johnson Creek had just four free-throw attempts.

Indergand led with 25 points, going 10-for-17 at the line. Peyton Smith chipped in another 10 points with a team-best six rebounds. 


WEST SALEM 98, 

DARLINGTON 90

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — In preparation for playoffs, the Redbirds faced off against the Panthers in a nonconference game on Monday, Feb. 5. With its win over Mineral Point, Darlington (17-2, 9-1 SWAL) moved to No. 2 in Division 4, but West Salem (16-2, 8-0 Coulee) cracked the top 10 rankings in Division 2, per the latest WisSports.net poll. 

Tamarrein Henderson was the leading scorer in the Panthers’ win. The senior, who is committed to play Division II basketball at University of Mary, dropped 51 points against the Redbirds. He was 5-for-9 from beyond the arc with 11 rebounds. Prior to Monday’s contest, Henderson’s career-high was 28 points.

Brady Long led Darlington with 25 points, going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Broker Buschor added 24 points with three 3s, and Will Murray finished with 20 points. Buschor grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Carter Murray also finished in double figures with 12 points.


CAMBRIDGE 73, BRODHEAD 59

CAMBRIDGE — Despite three players in double figures, Brodhead (8-10, 5-5 RVC) dropped a nonconference game against Cambridge (8-10, 3-2 Capitol South) on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Cullen Walker tallied 20 points, 15 coming from beyond the arc. Jaxon Dooley finished with 14 points, and Brody Riese chipped in another 10. As a team, the Cardinals drained eight 3-pointers but were just 1-for-6 from the free-throw line.

In other local boys basketball, Pecatonica played a pair of nonconference games. The Vikings (10-7, 7-2 Six Rivers East) fell to Warren, Ill. 70-50 on Monday, Feb. 5. Pecatonica bounced back for a 44-42 win over Weston (5-13, 0-9 Ridge & Valley) on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Tied at 42 with 1.5 seconds left, Tyler McKeon stole the Weston inbounds pass and chucked up a quick shot. Charles Anderson had enough time to grab the rebound and put it back in for the win.
