BELLEVILLE — Lake Mills swept the boys and girls team titles at the Raider Invitational May 14. Host Sugar River was third in the girls standings and fifth in the boys. Albany took sixth in the girls results and ninth in the boys, while Monticello was ninth on the girls side and seventh on the boys.
Albany’s Ava Ahnen won the 3,200-meter run (13:07.78) by more than a minute. She paired with Aby Conway, Payton Wachholz and Kaiya Zurfluh to win the 800-meter relay (2:04.83), a full second ahead of Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg.
Sugar River’s Ava Foley won the long jump (16 feet, 10 inches).
On the boys side, Monticello’s Evan Guenther was second in the 800 by just 19/100ths of a second. He also scored silver in the 1,600 finishing with a time of 4:38.65, a new school record, breaking John Zuber’s 2014 mark by nearly a second.
Sugar River’s Carter Scholey won the 3,200 by nearly two minutes. Scholey and teammates Matthew Loshaw, Thomas Nelson and Conor McCoy won the 3,200-relay by 12 seconds.
Monticello coach Amalia Delwiche said her small roster is seeing strong improvements across the board.
“Hannah Clark has dropped down to a 27.59 in the 200-meter dash and placed first in the 100 and 200 at River Ridge on May 11. Hannah is a strong competitor and very driven. She has a lot of potential to be a state competitor this year in both the 100 and 200,” Delwiche said. “Wade Noriega got a PR in shot put with a 33-03.75 at River Ridge and is working towards breaking 100 in the discus.” Noriega threw 98-06 at Belleville.
Other impressive marks from the Ponies included Braylon Hoesly breaking the 5-minute mark in the mile (4:55.38), and Rudy Wicker running a 55.13 in the 400 and a 2:22.85 in the 800.
“(That’s) after coming off the football season without much running training. He has a lot of potential in the 400,” Delwiche said. “His dad ran 50-seconds (in the 400) in high school, so Rudy is aiming for that. With training he can be very successful in that race.”
