STOUGHTON — The Rock County Fury saw their season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to conference rival Stoughton in the WIAA playoffs on Feb. 18.
After skating to a scoreless first period, the Fury came out of the first intermission with a bang as Emma Kilgora scored unassisted just seven seconds after the puck dropped.
The Stoughton Icebergs put home the equalizer 8 1/2 minutes later, and the two teams returned to the locker rooms for the second intermission all squared away again.
Disaster struck the Fury in the third period. Despite having a power play, Stoughton’s Laila Howe snuck away from the Fury back line and scored an unassisted short-handed goal with 10:02 left in the game. Less than two minutes later, Katelynn Weeks put the host squad ahead by two scores, and the Fury were unable to recover.
The Icebergs outshot the Fury 36-26, with Fury senior goalie Olivia Cronin stopping 33 attempts. Cronin finished the season with a .917 save percentage on 807 shots.
The Fury ended the season with a 7-16-2 overall record. Kilgora led the squad in goals (14) and assists (13). Monroe’s Marlies Brandli was second on the team in total points, tallying five goals and eight assists on defense.
