JANESVILLE — The Rock County Fury suffered its first Badger Conference loss of the season Jan. 7, a 4-3 overtime defeat at the hands of Madison Metro Lynx.
The Lynx took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power play, but the Fury responded in the second as Alyssa Knauf took a pass from Anika Einbeck and lit the lamp during another power play.
In the third, the Lynx, ranked fourth in the most recent Wisconsin Prep Hockey Coaches Poll released Jan. 6, scored back-to-back goals to go up 3-1 with seven minutes to play. The score held until just under four minutes remained when Einbeck took advantage of another power play opportunity. Haley and Alyssa Knauf moved the puck past the defense and found Einbeck, who went top shelf to make it 3-2.
With 1:20 left in regulation, the Fury pulled goalie Olivia Cronin to bring in an extra skater. The move worked, as Samantha Wells slapped in a shot through the five-hole from the blue line off a pass from Alysa Knauf, tying the game at 3-3 with just 42 seconds left in regulation.
The Lynx quieted the crowd just moments into the extra period, however, as Rachel Mirwald scored just 45 seconds after the puck dropped on a Fury turnover.
Cronin stopped 36 shots in the game as the Lynx outshot the Fury 40-26.
The Cap City Cougars, ranked third in the state, are at the top of the table with 10 points and are now the lone unbeaten team in the Badger South with a 5-0 league mark (11-1 overall). Rock County (9-5, 4-1) are in second place with eight points, while the Lynx (10-2, 3-1) sit third.
The Fury were set to square off against the Cougars in Beloit Jan. 9 and travel to Mequon Jan. 14.
The Fury’s last game of the year at SLICE in Monroe is set for Jan. 30 against Beaver Dam.
