MONROE — Jackson Hauri spent his first three years in high school reaching state, but a championship has remained elusive.

As a freshman at Orfordville Parkview, the then-106-pounder was fifth in Division 3 and finished with a 44-5 record. After transferring to Brodhead-Juda as a sophomore, Hauri went 38-5 in the 132-pound weight class but was knocked out in the first round at state.

Last year as a junior, Hauri went 33-3 and reached the 152-pound state championship, only to lose to Evansville-Albany’s Nolan Kicmol, whom Hauri defeated in the regional final.

“(I’ve) definitely been a man on a mission. I’ve put everything aside. This is my last go-round and I want to make everything count,” said Hauri, now a senior. “Previous experiences help, but I’ve got to clear my mind and focus on me and focus how I’m going to do it, envision the matches and go out and run my stuff.”

Hauri has amassed a career mark of 150-15, with a 106-10 record as a Cardinal.

“To overcome Jackson Hauri, you really have to pull out something special — or you have to be that elite guy,” Sugar River coach Peter Swenson said.

As the state’s top wrestler at 152 virtually all season, according to the Wisconsin Wrestling online rankings, Hauri has expectations to not only return to state, but to bring Brodhead-Juda its second individual title. Brady Colden won the 170-pound weight class in 2015, a year before Hauri entered high school.

“He’s always had good work ethic, but he’s been working extremely hard in practice. He stays after in practice every night, gets a few extra reps in and conditions himself harder,” Brodhead-Juda coach Bill Davis said. “A lot of the things he knows and does on the mat, he does on his own. A lot of what we do in practice is the fundamentals and working with the whole team, but Jackson and his father work on things more advanced than what we do in practice.”

Davis said several colleges are looking for Hauri’s services next year, but that the talented senior hasn’t yet made a decision on his future.

“He’s not sure what route to take. I’ve told him to take his time,” Davis said.

Hauri is slated to wrestle Dodgeville’s Riley Cook (28-12) in the first round, with either Westfield’s Ryan Knight (39-6) or Billy Dethloff (22-12) awaiting in the next match.

■ Jack Diederich, senior, 152-pounds, 25-14

■ Daniel Enloe, senior, 285-pounds, 28-10

“I’m trying not to focus on winning that state championship — obviously that’s my goal — but I’m trying to take it one match at a time,” Hauri said.

Hauri will be joined at this year’s WIAA Division 2 Adams-Friendship Sectional by teammates Jayson Starr (23-15, 138 pounds) and Brian McCullough (23-15, 145).

Sugar River senior Jack Diederich (25-14), whom Hauri pinned in the Evansville regional final Feb. 9, faces 12th-ranked Bradyn Saint (37-5) of Prairie du Chien in the bottom of the bracket. Lodi’s Colton Nicolay (26-9) and 10th-ranked Jaden Anderson (32-8) await in Round 2.

“Jack had a tough kid from Evansville in the (regional) semifinals,” Swenson said. Now the Raiders hope their 152-pounder can “ride the coattails with (Hauri) through sectionals and keep moving on from there.”

Starr, a junior, faces Wisconsin Dells junior Gavin Kingsley (19-6) in Round 1, and either West Salem-Bangor’s Dalton Schams (24-3) or River Valley’s Devan Alt (29-13) in the second round.

“Jayson Starr has really improved this year. The kid from Edgerton (Daniel Clark, 29-10), they’ve wrestled against each other for three years, and this year Jayson was finally able to get the best of him,” Davis said.

McCullough, a junior, gets WSB’s Aaron Bahr (41-4) in the first round, with PDC’s Reid Koenig or Lodi’s Zach Potter in his second. Sugar River junior Robert Chenoweth (26-9), who beat McCullough in the regional final, takes on Westby’s Austin Mowery (37-9) in the opener.

“McCullough started the year at 160. He couldn’t make weight at 145, and we have Jackson at 152, so 160 was the spot. And he struggled early on,” Davis said. “He really turned his season around once he was able to get down to 145.”

Sugar River sophomore Joe Quaglia (26-10, 126) is back to sectionals for the second time. Quaglia went 30-13 as a freshman, bowing out in the first round at state in the 106-pound weight class. In the first round, Quaglia takes on Viroqua’s Lucas Oldham (30-12), with either Creedon Abraham (29-4) of Wautoma-Wild Rose or PDC’s Chase Watson (21-19) waiting in Round 2.

“We made a decision about a week ago to move up to 126 because we knew there would be two kids at 120, and just looking at the weight classes, we made that decision. I think it paid off today and it will pay off for him at sectionals next week,” Swenson said.

Daniel Enloe, a senior, also qualified for sectionals. Enloe (28-10) faces PDC’s Jerrod Osterkamp in the first round of the heavyweight class, with a second-round matchup against either Kevin Coughlin (24-11) of Wisconsin Dells or Dylan Noel (22-14) of WSB.
