MONONA — The Cheesemakers dropped to 1-2 in Badger South play with a 6-1 loss to Monona Grove Sept. 10.

Monroe’s lone win came in the No. 1 doubles match, where Grace Tostrud and Jensen Christensen defeated Eva Khamphouy and Colleen Ross 7-6(3), 6-1.

“(They) played a tight first set and worked through some inconsistent play to force a set tiebreaker. Jensen and Grace really turned it on for the tiebreaker, and really cruised through the rest of the match,” Bordner said. “We still haven’t seen them play their best match yet, but yet they keep finding ways to win. If you look at their tiebreaker scores this year, it’s really impressive how well they’ve played in some of those clutch points.”

No. 1 singles Emma Towne, No. 3 singles Grace Mathiason and No. 4 singles Cecily Burch all were swept 6-0, 6-0. Bekah Rath lost the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-0.

“MG has a fantastic singles lineup, and it really showed,” Bordner said. “Our girls had some longer rallies, but in general MG’s singles players controlled the matches. We went in knowing that this was going to be an opportunity for us to see some excellent competition and try to improve, and I think we did make some gains. Playing opponents like these should hopefully help us once we get to subsectionals.”

In doubles play, Kerstin and Kylie Miller lost the 2-doubles match 6-4, 6-0, while Sadie Conway and Ava Petitjean fell 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 doubles match.

“Two- and three-doubles both showed a set of competitive play. I think our energy levels were maybe not quite where they needed to be but I’m proud they at least found ways to battle in their match,” Bordner said.
