Darlington, SR, Albany among teams to compete at UW-Platteville Invitational

PLATTEVILLE  — The Sugar River, Darlington and Albany boys and girls track teams got their track and field seasons underway at the Tri-State Small School Invitational at UW-Platteville on Saturday March 22. Sugar River boys finished in third place with 65 points. Albany boys were ninth with 24 points.

In the boys 200 meter dash, Sugar River’s William Pinnow, a junior, took fifth place with a time of 25.29 seconds. Freshman Jesse Luchsinger of Sugar River was 13th in 26.68 seconds. Also, for Sugar River, freshman Brogan Hoelscher finished 18th and did it in 27.71 seconds. In the 400 meter dash, Albany placed two runners in the top ten. Freshman Brooks Wachholz placed eighth in 1:01.39 and junior Beckett Wachholz placed 10th in 1:01.70. For the Sugar River Raiders, sophomore Finian Hoeper took 20th place in 1:05.69, while freshman Donovan Umhoefer was 30th in 1:12.58.

Results in the boys 800 meter run found Albany’s Kaleb Broughton, a junior, take eighth place with a time of 2:29.67. Junior Jackson Umhoefer of Sugar River secured 15th place in 2:36.89, and freshman Kamden Broughton was 16th in 2:37.32. Two runners from Sugar River placed in the 1600 meter run as sophomore Dylan Gardner finished sixth in 5:25.13 and freshman Benjamin Biank was eighth and did it with a time of 5:33.17.

Sugar River had the only area relay team that placed in the boys 4x200 meter relay. Junior Cooper Nemec, junior Sawyer O’Flanagan, senior Andrew Sarbacker, and senior Charlie Sarbacker captured third place in 1:40.88. Sugar River and Albany each placed a team in the 4x400 meter relay as the Sugar River team of sophomore Dylan Gardner, Sawyer O’Flanagan, Andrew Sarbacker, and Charlie Sarbacker finished in third place in 4:02.56. The Albany Comets team of freshman Brooks Wachholz, Beckett Wachholz, Kamden Broughton, and Kaleb Broughton came in seventh place.

The 4x800 meter relay resulted in Sugar River taking fifth place (10:15.66) behind the Raiders’ team of Benjamin Biank, Dylan Gardner, Finian Hoeper, and Jackson Umhoefer. In sixth place was Albany’s team of Kaleb Broughton, Brooks Wachholz, Kamden Broughton, and Beckett Wachholz who tallied a time of 10:17.06. 

Top performances in the high jump included sophomore Tucker Sysko and junior Cooper Nemec of the Sugar River Raiders taking fifth and sixth, respectively. The pole vault had seniors Charlie Sarbacker and Andrew Sarbacker of Sugar River tying for second place with a vault of 11 feet.

Sugar River got a fifth place finish from Jesse Luchsinger, 10th place from Tucker Sysko, and 15th place from Brogan Hoelscher in the long jump. Also, in the long jump, junior Kamron Parker was sixth with a jump of 17 feet, six inches. Parker took fourth place in the triple jump by soaring 37 feet, 2.50 inches. Scoring for Sugar River in the triple jump were Sawyer O’Flanagan in sixth place with a jump of 36 feet and Tucker Sysko in seventh place with a jump of 35 feet, 10 inches.

Senior Caleb Smith of the Albany Comets took second place (47 feet, 6.25 inches) in the shot put with sophomore Brent Weeden finishing in third place (43 feet, 7.50 inches). Sophomore Broderick Goebel of Sugar River was fifth and senior Danny Dunphy of Albany was eighth. 

In the girls competition, Sugar River finished the day in fourth place with 42 points and Albany ended in 13th place with 12 points.

The girls 55 meter dash featured a third place finish by Kalia Malaise of Sugar River in 8.15 seconds. Senior Anika Pederson of Sugar River completed the 55 meter dash in 30.01 seconds. Senior Emma Grosz of Albany had a time of 35.08 seconds and finished 30th. Sugar River freshman Ellie Gehin took 22nd place in the girls 400 meter. 

Six area girls placed in the 800 meter run. Freshman Emma Thompson of Albany took seventh place in 2:52.41. Senior Abigail Biank of Sugar River finished 12th in the race in 3:00.62. Freshman Avery Holverson of Sugar River was 13th with a time of 3:01.09. Sugar River’s Camryn Arnett, a senior, ran the course in 3:01.30 and finished in 14th place. Sophomore Lydia Ahnen of Albany was 16th with a time of 3:03.87 and 18th place went to freshman Tatum Doescher in 3:08.65. Lydia Ahnen of Albany was 11th in the 1600 meter run in 6:50.37 and a pair of Sugar River Raiders, freshman Mya Clark and senior Kaylie Clark finished second and third, respectively, in the 3200 meter run.

The 4x200 meter relay saw a fifth place finish for the Sugar River team of Camryn Arnett, senior Addison Edge, Kalia Malaise, and Anika Pederson with a time of 2:03.85. The Albany Comets’ team of freshman Raegan Hollis, Emma Thompson, Tatum Doescher, and Emma Grosz earned a seventh place finish. The Raiders and the Comets were approximately three seconds apart in the 4x400 meter relay as Sugar River’s team of Camryn Arnett, Abigail Biank, Addison Edge, and Ellie Gehin was ninth in 5:03.84 while Albany’s team of Emma Thompson, Tatum Doescher, Raegan Hollis, and Lydia Ahnen was 10th in 5:06.03. In the 4x800 meter relay, Sugar River’s Abigail Biank, Kaylie Clark, Mya Clark, and Avery Holverson captured fifth place with a time of 11:52.72

Top performers in the high jump included freshman Annabelle Curl of Sugar River taking seventh place and Raegan Hollis of Albany with a 14th place finish. Emma Thompson of Albany was one of the top long jumpers as she placed fourth with a jump of 14 feet, 6.50 inches. Emma Grosz of Albany was 22nd and freshman Aubrie Bartelt of Albany was 24th in the long jump. Kalia Malaise of Sugar River took second place in the triple jump while Emma Grosz of Albany came in ninth place in the triple jump.

Senior Lillyana Morales of Albany delivered a sixth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, nine inches. Other participants included sophomore Reeson Speth in seventh place with a throw of 29 feet, 7.50 inches. Aubrie Bartelt of Albany was 16th, Lauryn Arnett of Sugar River was 17th, and Annabelle Curl was 21st in the shot put.

The Darlington Redbirds boys track team tallied 10 points in the Tri-State large school invitational at UW-Platteville on Friday March 21, good for eighth place. 

Junior Kane McDermott finished in 17th place in the 200 meter dash in 27.15 seconds. Senior Porter Paisley was 23rd with a time of 29.52 seconds. In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Artemio Rico took 21st place in 1:05.39. Paisley finished in 22nd place in 1:05.69. Three Darlington athletes placed in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Marcus Kendall was 14th with a time of 2:35.60, senior Matthew Belanger was 18th in 2:44.04, and junior Evander Wolfe took 23rd place in 3:08.31. In the 1600 meter run, Darlington got 15th place and 16th place finishes from senior Landon King (5:43.54) and senior Martin Lobato (5:45.52). 

The 55 meter hurdles is where senior Danick Haesler of Darlington finished fifth in 8.61. Darlington also placed in the 4x200 meter relay, taking sixth place with senior Isaac Crist, senior Aiden Dempsey-Strang, Haesler, and freshman Lucas Olson posting a time of 1:41.83.The Redbirds got a sixth place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with junior Brandon Reyes, sophomore Mason Wiegel, sophomore Phoenix Johnson and senior Junior Jimenez completing the relay in 9:56.48.

The high jump saw two Darlington Redbirds place as freshman Lucas Olson came in tied for ninth with a jump of six feet. Sophomore Artemio Rico was 12th with a high jump of four feet. Senior Anthony Morrone led Darlington in the shot put where he placed 16th. Also, for Darlington in the shot put, sophomore Gage Ruf was 22nd and junior Brody Cooper was 25th. 

The Darlington girls track team finished in seventh place in the meet with 26 points. In the 200 meter dash, sophomore Paulina Andrade claimed 17th place in 33.68. Senior Yamileth Morales was 21st, clocking a time of 36.04.

The Redbirds had two place winners in the 800 meter run as junior Piper Depauw took eighth place in 2:51.62 and 13th place belonged to sophomore Lily King, who achieved a time of 3:13.74. The 1600 meter run featured senior Stella McGowan taking eighth place in 6:30.44 and sophomore Marta Roelli getting 16th place in 6.56.66. In the long-distance relays, Darlington captured seventh place in the 4x200 with senior Allie Andrews, junior Catie Hartwig, sophomore Callie Blosch, and freshman Lexie Meyers running the course in 2:06.08.

The Redbirds’ 4x800 meter relay team of junior Adalee Berget, sophomore Madison Welacha, sophomore Brianna Vazquez, and junior Clara Solverson, gave Darlington a first-place finish in 10:37.31. Solverson also competed in the high jump for Darlington and took third place with a high jump of four feet. Hartwig earned points for Darlington in the girls long jump, where she was sixth with a long jump of 9.50 feet. 

Two freshmen participated for Darlington in the shot put with Loudon McGowan placing 22nd and Anyka Johnson placing 26th.
