D3 Playoffs: No. 1 Poynette hold Ponies to one hit

POYNETTE — A promising season came to an end for Monticello-New Glarus as the Ponies lost to the Poynette Pumas 8-0 in a Division 5 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, May 27. 

The Ponies had only one base runner, a single by center fielder Karlee Wilkins, as MNG players struck out 15 times against the Pumas.

Monticello-New Glarus freshman pitcher Heidi Olson allowed seven earned runs 11 hits, three walks  and two hit batters. She also threw two wild pitches, and the defense behind her made a pair of costly errors. 

Poynette pitcher Kassidy McCaffery won the game almost single-handedly, striking out 15 batters and retire just one over the limit in a complete game shutout. At the plate she was 1x2 with a home run, three RBIs and a walk. Addison Mackey was 3x3 with three runs scored and two doubles, and Grace Gavinski was 2x3 with four RBIs, two runs and a double.

The Pumas scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth for insurance.

Monticello-New Glarus (15-7) ended the regular season in third place in the Six Rivers Conference, right behind Belmont and Barneveld, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association poll of the season.
